Achievements in Engineering #14, Period 2 Monday

Once again, class met in the Danger Shop. Mike waited for everyone to arrive before launching into an explanation of the simulation. "This week marks the 36th anniversary of Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon," he began. "Now, I'm sure that you kids from the future or alternate universes probably travel to the moon every day, but in this time period, it's pretty rare. As of 2008, only 12 humans have walked on the surface of the moon and the last of those was Eugene Cernan, commander of Apollo 17. It is a feat that no one has accomplished since."

Mike passed around the usual handouts before proceeding. "Today, we're going to walk in the steps of the Apollo astronauts. We'll visit a simulation of the Taurus-Littrow Valley and explore the Lunar Module. Oh, and there's also a Lunar rover available if anyone wants to take it for a spin."

Naomi took down notes, she liked learning about the moon from this time period. It was extremely different to how it was in her time.

Jen had taken a few family vacations to the moon as a kid, but that was different from reliving the first mission to the moon. Someone was looking highly undignified as she tried very hard not to squeal out loud.

Can you believe two astronauts actually lived in here for the three days they spent on the moon? How about cramming three astronauts in there, like the crew of Apollo 13 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_13)?

Top speed 8 mph (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_Roving_Vehicle). Think of how far you'll go in that baby.

Bender started up the rover, steering it over rocks, more rocks and a stealthy looking crater.

"That's fine," he muttered to himself. "But where's the theme park?"

"So, for those of you who have actually been to the moon, why don't you tell us what it's like?" asked Mike. With this particular group of students, there had to be at least one person who'd really been there.

"An amusement park," said Bender. "With singing whalers, tacky souvenirs and gophers that couldn't tell a decent joke if you beat them over the head with a harpoon."

"I like the amusement park idea, but why signing whalers on the moon?" asked Mike.

"Fun-geering recreation of the first astronauts on the Sea of Tranquility," sad Bender. "If you had a gang of singing robots whalers what else'd you with them?"

When she pings in.
