"Hello, everyone. Don't forget final projects are due next week," Sam said, once the students were seated. Around the room, they might notice some pictures and video. On each desk was a fresh apple. "Today, as a treat, we'll be discussing wormholes."

No, she wasn't kidding about the treat part. Sam thought this was the best subject ever.

"Wormholes get their name from the easiest way to describe them. If a worm is traveling over the skin of an apple, then the worm could take a shortcut to the opposite side of the apple's skin by burrowing through its center, rather than traveling the entire distance around, just as a wormhole traveler could take a shortcut to the opposite side of the universe through a topologically nontrivial tunnel. Or, in other words, the shortest distance between two points - even in space and time - is a straight line, just as it is when you're working with maps or the shortest route to the corner store. On the larger intergalactic scale, however, that straight line is called a wormhole."

Sam also went on to explain, in great and extensive detail, the difference between black holes and wormholes, as well as the fact that a collapsing black hole would not cause a black hole.

"Of course, this is all purely theoretical," Sam finished, smiling slightly, "unless some of you know differently?"

Romeo missed the "treat" aspect of the lecture, but he listened and took notes anyhow. he should have slept more after getting home from Buenos Aires.

John blinked, wondering where the treat was. Then he spotted the apple.

Ichigo was playing with the apple on his desk. He actually got the explanation Sam was giving. What he didn't get was where the hell she was drawing that straight line because as far as he knew, the universe wasn't fruit and you couldn't just burrow your way through it. Unless she just meant to drill a hole from one side of the planet to the other.

Wait, were there worms in his apple? Kevin didn't trust it, so he pushed it to the edge of the desk with his pencil, not wanting to touch it and have a worm pop out.

Sokka happily took notes and ate the apple. He was about 3/4 of the way done with the fruit before he connected it to the lecture, and frantically scanned the bit that was left for worms.

Hoshi found the topic really interesting and took lots of notes, but she did not touch her apple. Worms were gross and she didn't want to accidentally bite into one.

Rodney finished his apple before the lecture even started so that he could take copious notes without the distraction of food.

Naomi didn't eat the apple but she still took down detailed notes.

Sam didn't understand the 'treat' aspect of this lecture. He did, however, understand apples. He didn't touch his, though, because ew, worms.

Rikku was going to snack on her apple and take diligent notes.

Sokka blinked at Professor Carter. "Uh... two things?" he asked. "First... our apples didn't really have worms in them, did they? And second, if you're this excited about wormholes, there's a really awesome TV show called Wormhole X-Treme! you might like."

"No, the apples don't have worms in them, as far as I know," she said, amused, "and I know about Wormhole X-Treme!. I wasn't aware anyone else watched it, though."

Sokka tried not to look as relieved and less-nauseous as he felt, and instead shrugged. "It's on every now and then. They've got wormholes, and that's pretty cool."

"You know they don't really work that way, right?"

Okay, they sort of did, except for the part where they were two way like a train tunnel on the show, but that was hardly common knowledge.

This topic could end the world someday, but the OCD won't
