"Hello, class," Lulu said, and today they'd find the home ec room set up, again, with the sewing machines. "Now that you all have the basics, today we're going to get started on the first major sewing assignment. At each station, you'll find two patterns. The first is for what's known as Thai fisherman pants. The second further down the page is for a more complicated type of pant.

"You have two choices. The first is to complete, today, the Thai fisherman pants. You should have enough time," Lulu assured them, "in the class period to do so. Alternately, you can begin the comfy pants, and finish them next week. What this means is that anyone who chooses, this week, the Thai pants will have a different assignment next week." She smiled, just slightly; a quirk up at the side of her mouth. "A bit of a gamble, really. You don't know what it is that you'll end up making next week."

She waved her hand to encompass the work area. "So, get to it," she said. "If you have any questions, I'm available, but all the instructions you need should be at your stations."

Hmm. Alex took a moment to try and decide which pattern to start with. She decided to go with the comfy pants. Why not?

Francine actually thought the second pair of pants seemed easier to make, though maybe it was because they looked more like something she'd worn herself, while the others were a little exotic.

So she started in on the second pattern.

Harry's luck so far with the machines had him thinking it was better to have more time, so he was going with more complicated. This was probably a mistake, as evidenced by his failure to get his sewing machine to function properly for more than a minute at a time.

At some point, Hoshi approached Lulu. "I wanted to apologize for missing class last week," she said. "You see, I already knew how the election would turn out and felt I should keep a low profile until everyone else knew."
