"Congratulations, you've made it all the way to week ten," Ghanima said dryly from her perch on the desk. "So far, many of our discussions seem to have focused on physical engagements of force, mostly because many of you are all familiar with tactics in a military sense."

"While I am as much a fan of armed combat as the next Fremen, however, it is it necessary to learn how to apply the tactical ideas you are learning outside a battlefield."

"Last week, we tried to measure cost against outcome when weighing the human element," Ghanima remarked. "Today, we focus completely on the human component, and turn our tactical prowess to that most dreaded tactical engagement of all - relationships."

"Each of you has a slip on your desk with an assignment. You must try and follow the directions to the best of your abilities, using the tactical ideas we have discussed in your negotiations. You are not limited to your classmates for this exercise, and indeed, I shall award extra credit for each successful 'mission' you undertake. I will do my best to listen to radio and chart your progress, but you will be expected to report on your varying levels of success next week."

"Yes, boys and girls, you are going on dates. Get what you want out of the other person, without giving too much ground. Try not to end the world while you are at it."

"Well, Seregil and I are seeing each other," Ronan replied, "but it's... hardly exclusive." He shrugged. "We see each other as we have time, but it's more... fun than anything else."

"So it wouldn't be a problem for you to have dinner with someone else, then," Ella said, a smile dancing around her mouth. This was the assignment, right? "Dick and I ... well, we aren't dating anyone else, but it's not incredibly serious. I like him a tremendous amount, but there's someone at home."

"No," Ronan said, shaking his head. "No, it definitely wouldn't." He grinned as Ella. "Why?" he asked. "Did you have something in mind?"

Ronan? Completely missing the part where this is totally Ella trying to fulfill the assignment. He couldn't help it! He was distracted by, "Ooh, pretty girl!"

Honestly. Boys.

"I didn't have plans Thursday?"

And that gave her time to warn and apologize to Dick.

Ronan laughed aloud at that, and, okay, yes, he was cluing in. But he liked cooking for people, so he figured he'd let that slide.

And whether anything came of it or not, Ella was quite pretty.

"Shall we plan for dinner, then?" Ronan asked. "Eating in, or going out? I should tell you, I'm quite the cook."

It wasn't likely anything would come of it -- two boys was more than enough, thank you -- but Ronan was charming and handsome, and this should be fun.

"Then I think you should cook for me," she said. "And I look forward to it."

"That sounds great," Ronan said. "D'you have any particular preferences? Or any allergies I should be aware of?"

Ella shook her head. "I don't like food too terribly spicy, because I'm not used to it," she said. "And I'm rather partial to sweets. Anything else is fair game."

Not too spicy eliminated most of the Indian food Ronan was considering, and a fair chunk of the Mexican; potential menus began to assemble themselves in his head. "Great," he said, his grin just a little bit wider. "Shall we say six o'clock, then, on Thursday evening? My room or yours?"

"My room is fine," Ella told him. "I'm in 308, and 6 o'clock sounds perfect."

"Six o'clock in room 308, then," Ronan agreed, and, with a sly smile, he added, "It's a date."
