Once more, class was held in the Danger Shop, with different areas set up as a kitchen, laundry room and living room of a house. "I know you guys from the future can take care of household chores with the push of a button," began Mike. "Actually, you wouldn't consider things like microwaves, vacuums, washing machines and dryers to be feats of engineering. Believe me, you're wrong. Let's see how much you appreciate modern household appliances after a day of good old-fashioned housework."

It's a short one today. Chat, pass notes, or find a partner for today's activities.

Naomi took down brief notes.

The kitchen in this house has no stove, microwave, toast or oven, but you do have a fire pit. Your task is to find a way to make without any modern conveniences.

Bender looked at the fire. Using his special features to cook would probably be cheating. Not that that was a problem if someone made it worth his while.

He gave the fire pit a cautious kick.

The rug in the living room really could use some vacuuming, except they didn't exist before 1891. Your task is to get that rug clean -- by taking it outside and beating it.

This laundry room has a tub, a clothesline, and a traditional charcoal iron (http://www.wrvmuseum.org/journal/journal_ftbr_0497.htm). Your task: clean, dry and press a load of laundry.

Once you're finished with the tasks or just gave up, chat about what you've learned. If you've made it this far, Mike has apple cider and candy for you.

"So, there you go," said Mike. "It's not so easy to run a household without a little bit of help from engineering. I hope you guys enjoy the candy. You seriously deserve it after all that work. Oh, can I get some volunteers to haul the rest of this candy back to my office? I'll probably be munching on leftover candy for a while."

Mike figured one more piece of chocolate couldn't hurt... except a second later, he actually turned into a chocolate bar.

I have a flight, a layover, and then another flight so I'll be pretty scarce until tomorrow when I get into my hotel.
