Care for Magical Creatures; Period One. [ 11/03. ]

It was up to the students to decide whether they found it a good thing or a disappointing one to discover the danger shop back to the old classroom setting this morning, making it evident that there would be no adventures in the wilderness today. They might notice, especially, that the eggs from earlier in the semester were back, and, in front of Minsc, there were many piles of papers.

"Good morning, class!" He greeted them with his usual chipper brusqueness. "I am glad to see you all here again for another class! It makes me sad to tell you that today will be very boring, but it is very important. You see, it is almost time for your eggs to hatch! But before they hatch, we might do well to learn a think or two about taking care of baby animals, because you will soon find yourself new mommies and daddies of a magical creature next week!"

"Please, take one of these packets about basic animal care and look over them carefully through the week, unless you like having an unruly pet that will bite you and potentially kill you or make your life generally not a happy one!"

"Today, you will be preparing your eggs for hatching next week. I cannot express how important it is for you to spend this time with them well! There might be a shell between you and what is inside, but this is a good time for it to already develop a connection with things like the sound of your voice, the feel of your hands, and your ever important smell. It could be what determines whether or not it thinks you are a parental unit or if you are food!"

"So, go, take care of the eggs, look over the packets. If you have any questions now or through the week, please let me know, or see me in my office, and I will be happy to help! Boo and I want you all to do very well next week when they hatch!"

Chris took notes and went through the packet, highlighting info that seemed important.

Molly read through her packet and listened to the lecture, writing little notes in the margins.

Harry, being Harry, flipped through the packed and quickly skimmed it. He'd read it over later. Really.

Jeff held on to his egg for a bit.

Then he tried whispering something nurturing at it.

Eventually, he settled for chanting the word "breasts" at a low volume.

Helen took good care of her egg, making sure it was warm and even singing softly to it when she thought no one else would notice.

Mac just rocked her egg in her hands. It supposedly worked with babies, so why not eggs?

Marco patted the egg and resisted the urge to get out the paints and start giving it designs.

Ella cuddled her egg closely and told it that it was beautiful and she was proud of it, no matter what it looked like.

Chris spoke quietly to his egg and made sure that it was warm enough.

Sam spent his time carefully holding his egg against his chest, keeping it warm and hoping that the nurturing gesture would lead to a non-clawing creature.

Savannah cradled her egg against her and sang softly to it.

Molly spent the class telling her egg about her weekend and making sure it was warm and comfortable. Eventually she started singing to it.

Disco might not have been the best choice.

Harry gave his egg a few pats and said hello to it. It looked kind of fuzzy around the edges he thought, but he was probably just tired.

Jeff was capable of caring for eggs!

Sort of.

If they were in a pan.

Maybe.

Jan was in no way capable of caring for an egg, at least not without some opposable-thumbed help.

Once it hatched, however, it would be another story.

He hoped so, anyway.
