Leadership, Thursday, Period 1, Class 8 (10/30/08)

"Once you've defined the problem you need to develop an action plan," Nathan said as he passed around that week's handouts. "Your action plan is the steps you are going to take in order to solve this problem. Today I want you to get into groups and develop an action plan to solve a problem.

"The problem is this: As a group, you want to convince me not to give you guys a final exam. Put your heads together - not literally - and come up with a plan for how you're going to convince me to do that. For the record, the odds that I'm going to agree with you are pretty small, but for the sake of the class let's see what you come up with."

Nathan grinned at them. "I'm here if you have any questions."

"What reasons do we have for not taking the final?" A beat. "Other than not wanting to?"

"Do we need more than that?" axed Bender, doing his best to look like an honest robot. "But that doesn't matter; the question's why would he want to hold one?"

Teddy nodded seriously. "All that work going into it..."

"The problems of accurately grading a varied student body..." Bender agreed.

"Maybe it would be easier to have a nice relaxing day?" Teddy suggested.

"We've only got his best interests at heart," and at that Bender snickered.

Momoko raised an eyebrow. "Uhm. How about, does he have the authority to give us one? I mean, did we ever actually declare him the leader on that first day? I can't remember."

"I can't recall it either," Teddy replied. "And, even if we did, I think the point of the class is to lead him by the end, so what better way than to set the rules of our final?"

Momoko nodded. "Though saying that we should set the rules of our own final implies we will still have a final. Which would be a compromise, right? Is compromise still leadership?"

"I don't think groveling will work," Meg said.

"Possibly b-bribery instead?" Hinata suggested.

"Bribery would be unethical, though," Alex argued. "Could we argue logically? Like, prove that a final wouldn't do us any good?"

Joan really hoped that they could convince him not to give them a final. That would be awesome.

Just because he said the possibility was slim didn't mean that Teyla wasn't going to make sure her group tried to come up with something.

"Hypnosis," Agnes asserted. "I don't know how to do it, but I could learn."

"Are we supposed to do that?" Dor asked. "I thought we were supposed to argue our case for not giving homework."

"Or you can just have us babble at him until he agrees," Dor's desk said aloud for everyone to hear.

"That's not very nice," Dor said reprimanding the desk.

"Aw, you're no fun," the desk grumbled.

"You don't REALLY expect to argue it successfully, do you?" Agnes asked. "I mean, logic is really on his side, here."

Of course, there were more important matters to discuss. She gave the desk a long, hard look. "How long have you been able to talk?"

"Since he he came here," the desk replied.

"It's my magic talent," Dor said with a shrug. "Well I just mean that hypnosis isn't persuading someone. It's forcing someone."
