"Afternoon, everyone," Sam said from her perch on the desk. "It's good to see you all after the parental invasion this weekend. Rodney, I hope you found your sister."

"Today we'll be talking about light. The three primary properties of light are intensity, frequency or wavelength, and polarization."

"The human spectrum of visual is from red to violet, which can be seen individually when you look at white light through a prism," she explained, writing ROYGBIV on the board, near the equations, "but ultraviolet and infrared are just as important for human survival, as well as the survival of the planet. A red shift--where suddenly infrared light is visible to the human eye--is fatal after a remarkably short period of time. Not just to the humans, but to the things that humans depend on for food, such as plants and animals."

Not their shining moment of Stargate use, no.

"Light, obviously, can come from a number of different sources, although the primary source of light on this planet is obviously the sun. Light, which is thought to travel in waves, can be refracted, or bent through the use of optics. We'll get into theories of how light works next week. For now, I just want you to get used to seeing it and measuring it--there are prisms, magnifying lenses, and telescopes for you to work with, as well as different light sources, so you can see how the spectra of light differ. There are also spectrometers, so you can measure the light and try to predict its behavior, if that's your thing."

Worf was looking at the prisms and lenses with a little bit of disappointment.

He might have been hoping to build a laser.

Sokka noticed that what Forehead was doing with the equipment was pretty similar to what he was doing, so he went over to join him. "Do you know how to make a laser?" he asked.

Romeo played with the prisms, mostly just using them to make rainbows.

"Sorry about my dad," Rikku said abruptly, by way of greeting. "He's ... like that. I met your friend, he seems neat. Ooooh, rainbows."

"You talked to Ben?" Romeo asked absently, turning a prism so the rainbow would rotate and flash off the walls. "Don't worry about your father. I've met worse."

[OOC: Fleeing to bed.]

"He was mostly teasing," she said with a shrug, scooping up a prism herself and letting one short rainbow splay out over the desk. "Yeah. Bright shirt, red hair, and we talked a lot about your home. How ... you know. Keeping the peace is way harder than starting up fighting. It's getting better, I think."

(OOC: Night!)

"For my home or yours?" Romeo asked, not sure if he'd lost a thread somewhere. "Though it's probably true anywhere."

"Yours," she said easily. "That we were talking about. He says it's getting better, I mean, with people getting along. And we kinda talked about mine, too, but mostly how things are changing, and how it's hard to undo all of that in a short time, you know?"

"He said as much," Romeo said. "I'm not sure. It all feels very far from here. Even when I've gone home, I've felt far from all of it."

"You've changed," she said, biting her lower lip. "It happens. This becomes home, and home seems weird again when you go back to it. It all moves on without you and you kinda wonder where your place is, now, yeah?"

They were cool little devices that could make sparklies and rainbows.

Of course Chad was fascinated by playing around with them, although, to look at him, he looked extremely bored.

Ichigo was rolling one of the prisms between his fingers, that whole predicting thing wasn't really his cup of tea. "You missed my dad this weekend," he told Chad, oh so casually.

Chad blinked a little for a moment before looking up from the lenses toward Ichigo. "I did?" he asked, although he guessed it made sense. It was Parents' Weekend, and Ichigo did have at least one living parent. "Did your sisters visit too?"

"No, he left them with Orihime," he said. He wondered if at least Karin would have made his father behave. He doubted it. "I did see Orihime." He paused. "Yours, not mine. Not that she belongs to either of us, but you know..."

"Yeah, I know," Chad said, with a grunt that overrode his very slight smile. "She didn't shut up about it all that evening."

"She wasn't as weirded out as I thought she'd be," Ichigo admitted, because it was easier than admitting that it made him miss him just a little.

Chad hesitated before voicing his thoughts on that. "I'm...not sure she really actually understood it that well," he admitted and, with a glance toward Ichigo to look him over, he added, "And I did warn her pretty well, so she kind of expected it. You're not as bruised up as I'd thought you'd be if your dad was here..."

"He was busy terrorising the girls I know," Ichigo grumbled. "He even bothered Ino at the clinic."

There was a long moment of silence.

"Oh, that had to be interesting."

Yes. Interesting.

"Good thing they were both at the clinic already?" Chad guessed, only left to assume that blows had to have been exchanged in that whole thing, knowing from personal experience about Ino's temper and knowing...enough about Ichigo's father's...eccentricities.

"I'm not sure how he survived it," Ichigo admitted and he wasn't going to repeat what his father had asked Ino. He'd die of embarrassment. "He should have just sent Karin and Yuzu instead."

Ichigo would die of embarrassment? This was Chad's sister they were talking about here!

"...come on, Ichigo," Chad said. "That clinic wouldn't survive a whole weekend without your sisters there."

Ino was stronger than he was. When it came to... these kind of things which he was currently not thinking about. Neither was he thinking about it in regards to Ino. Really.

"I know, but I wouldn't have minded him not traumatising everyone I know," he said. He was just sulking, really.

"At least it's over now?" Chad offered by way of support, which, he felt, was a much better way to go about it than bringing up the slightly conflicted feeling he was having here that at least Ichigo still had a parent that could visit him.

"I'm sure they'll understand that your dad is kind of insane."

Ichigo would be more than willing to share, but he doubted that would help Chad.

"Yeah, just..." he shook his head. "No matter. Apparently he got Orihime to mind Yuzu and Karin. I'm slightly worried what she tried feeding them."
