The Art of War, Week #8 [Period 3, Monday]

When the students came in, they would discover that Ghanima had shoved all the desks back against one wall. Instead, there were piles of pillows and blankets tossed around the room, and tables along another wall filled with treats.

Those that had taken her mythology class might recognize the set-up as 'Ghanima is Showing a Movie' Day.

On the board, she had written one section from chapter seven:

36. When you surround an army, leave an outlet free.
Do not press a desperate foe too hard.

"As some of you may have learned this weekend, a cornered rat will fight longer and harder than one with an escape route," Ghanima said clearly. "People will become vicious and do anything and everything if they think there is no hope left. This doesn't just apply to armies. People will also behave this way in regards to their personal lives."

"Which is why today, you all get a movie," she stated. "I had a lovely lesson all written up, but I had a very full office this weekend, and I want you to think about how some of the tactics we've discussed could be used in your interpersonal relationships. If we have time at the end of class, I'd like to discuss what you've just witnessed."

She spread her arms to indicate the three tables full of goodies. "There's moddable treats from JGoB, coffee, juice, and hot cider. Help yourselves."

He winced.

"That, er, kind of happened with Ino when they got to meet really," he said with a brief chuckle.

"I hope things turned out well for you at least."

"Henry intimidated Ino?" Tony asked, puzzled. She hadn't seemed intimidated.

He couldn't help the quiet laugh.

"No, Ino intimidated Andrew."

That made more sense. Tony couldn't imagine Ino being intimidated by anyone. "Was that before or after she decided she wanted to kill him?"

"Sometime before," he admitted, nibbling on the cookie. It wasn't that he didn't care, because he did. He had cared the whole time. It was just old news, nothing to get excited about.

"When they met, really."

Tony nodded. "To be fair," he said. "I think that was the effect Henry was going for."

"He did have something of an imposing air," he said with a grin.

"Not outrightly hostile, though."

A sip of his tea.

"Thankfully, there are some limitations to who can come to this place. I'd hate to see anyone's response to my mother."

"I take it she's pretty scary?"

He swallowed the tea in his mouth.

"She was a right bitch," he said as he leaned back.

"But she had a presence. There was something about her, sometimes anyway. Sometimes it was just old Auntie Witch off making a mess about the keep. Sometimes, though, she had... I don't know. I don't have the words for it. I doubt I ever will."

He shook his head.

"Not that it matters much now."

No matter what Glinda said.

Tony took a sip of his coffee. "She sounds... well, difficult to live with." He gave Liir a small smile. "But someone worth knowing."

"She's a legend now," he admitted.

"It's rather creepy sometimes. But she was my Witch. My mother. I have that at least.

"Worth knowing," he confessed, perhaps for the first time really.
