Science Lab, Saturday

Sam had decided to celebrate Parents' Weekend by cleaning all the lab equipment. Sure, she had TAs who could do it, but why take them away from their families when she wasn't doing anything else? Plus, this way she'd be around to meet any parents and if any students wanted to show their folks the lab.

With Bach's cello concertos going, it was even pretty relaxing.

Show off your scientific expertise!

Like a normal 12-year-old would enter the mall, Jeannie entered the Science Lab. She was abuzz with excitement but playing it cool so people would let her work with the awesome equipment Mer had told her about.

"Yes?" Sam glanced up from her scrubbing, a little confused by Jeannie's age and lack of parents.

"You must be Dr. Carter!" Jeannie grinned, eyes wide as she looked around the room. "Mer told me you guys had some cool tech, but this is way beyond what we've got back home."

"I am, yes. And we do, but...who's Mer?" She frowned as she tried to remember a student by that name.

"Meredith? He probably told you his name was Rodney, but it's not," Jeannie smirked. "Rodney's his middle name. I'm Jeannie McKay."

"Oh!" Sam broke into a wide, wide smile. Which she would never use to torment this McKay, but the other, older, slightly more egotistical one? He was definitely fair game. "Of course I know Rodney. Welcome to Fandom, Jeannie. Are you interested in science, or are you looking for your brother?"

"He's around somewhere," she waved her hands in a patented dismissive McKay manner. "But he said I could take a look at his project and check his partner's math for him." She loved having a purpose like this.

"You're checking his partner's math?" Sam indicated what she thought was Rodney and John's project. Not that she'd noticed anything wrong with John Sheppard's math, but she supposed it couldn't hurt. "Isn't that a bit advanced?"

Jeannie grinned at Sam. "I dabble." Understatement of the century.

Sam grinned back, understanding. "Were your parents part of a special breeding program or something?"

"Surprisingly you're not the first person to ask that," Jeannie replied. "But usually they add something about the breeding being for lack of soul or ability to relate to others. And they're not directed at me." She was proud of that last part.

"Your brother's not that bad," she paused, knowing that some of the same complaints had been leveled against her over the years, "Unless there's another one?"

"No, Mer's a big teddy bear," Jeannie agreed. "Except that you've gotta pin him down if you want a hug. I have surprisingly strong upper body strength for a 12-year-old."

"Er, congratulations?"

"So why do you teach here? Aren't you sort of young? Mer would say someone your age should be doing research and publish. But then, all he wants out of life is a Nobel."

"I'm sure this will come as a huge shock to you, but your brother is not always right," she rolled her eyes. "I've already done all the publishing I intend to do. Now I just want to research for its own sake."

"That's so noble," Jeannie replied. "Does Mer do well in your class? Anyone pick on him regularly?" She'd so beat them up.

More like that everything she wanted to work on was based on alien technology, but that was okay. "Rodney does extremely well. He's even one of my teaching assistants. As for picking on...not that I've noticed?"

Like office hours, but without an office
