Chemistry, 10/24, Period 1

Tyler seemed impatient as the students filed in today. No, not impatient; wary and watchful. Like he was waiting for something.

"Morning," he told the students as they gathered. "I know you're all anxious to either see or find a hiding place way away from your assorted parental figures, so I'll keep my lecture on the short side today.

"I trust you all put together your midterm experiments and are rarin' to present them. You have 15 minutes to set up, then I'll walk around and ask you questions. The exhibits will stay up for the weekend if you want to show them off, and I'll be in my office" -- as much as he could get away with -- "this afternoon and Saturday."

He gave a tiny smile. "If any of you don't want me to talk to your visitors, I accept bribes if they're good enough."

Ino was rather dubious about Parent's Weekend, but surely it had to be better than last year, right?

Right. No falling off the roof this time.

Tony had a hard time staying awake. Early morning classes and hanging out with vampires didn't exactly mix. He braced his chin on his palm and let his eyes close for a moment. Maybe no one would notice if he dozed off?

Tony jumped. "Uh, yeah, totally," he said, blinking to try and clear the sleep from his eyes.

Reno had made his way through a somewhat distracting October, and as a result, his presentation was sort of tossed together at the last minute.

Fortunately, Reno knew enough about electricity to piece together a simple electrolysis demonstration with a battery (conveniently snitched from his remote-control helicopter), a glass of saltwater, some wire, some cardboard, and two pencils.

Hey. Look. Bubbles.

.... And then, because he felt like it, he cased in the battery using some handwavey process of awesome and blew the stupid thing up using a Bunsen burner. Because the explodies were more entertaining than the stupid bubbles.

"Soft spot for electricity," Reno replied with a shrug. "I ain't too worried about showin' it off again. Anyone who might give a damn enough to come to the island for the weekend really doesn't need any kinda reassurance that I know how to run electricity through water anyhow, I'm thinkin'."

Michael had made a super-strong volcano.

...he was shielding it so it wouldn't get out of control. That would be bad and get him a fail.

Jack set up a rig where a diet cola bottle with plastic film over the mouth was suspended over a pipe containing those candy things. The plan was to make a rocket that would shoot up, not a huge mess that would spray everywhere.

He was wearing a poncho, so there was a good indication as to where this was going.

"Okay, three, two, one, liftoff!" It was a partial success, in that the bottle did lift off and a partial failure in that Jack was covered in cola, yet grinning.

Rikku's setup was a bunsen burner with a test tube over it, pointed at a slight angle. (Away from the class.) The material in the test tube was nearly liquid. And Rikku's goggles weren't around her neck today: she was actually wearing them.

"Okay," she said. "This is potassium chlorate, and I'm melting it. Uh. That's potassium with chlorine and then some oxygen all mixed up. And this," she said, holding up a pair of tongs with a red piece of candy in it, "is a gummi bear, which is mostly sugar, or sucrose. It's got some hydrogen and carbon and oxygen in it. You can use any color, I just like red 'cause it's flashy. So now. If you add the gummi bear ..."

She reached over carefully and dropped the gummi bear in. And then hopped back again as the gummi bear reached the liquid and flames filled the test tube. There was a loud hissing noise and white smoke, and the small solid bear was turning black and dancing around crazily.

After the reaction died down, Rikku grinned. "That was an oxidizing reaction. It used the gummi bear and the liquid and some of the oxygen in the air, too. And what you're left with is potassium chloride -- that's just potassium and chlorine, no oxygen -- and carbon dioxide, and water. Everything gets all swapped around. Also, it's seriously freaking cool. Any questions?"

"Thank you!" she bounced. "I found some equation-things, too, for the sciencey side of things. And nope! My family isn't coming."

She was very, very cheerful about this, yes.

And also wrong. Still.

Tony filled a basin with water, added dish soap and stirred it carefully. He held a butane lighter under the surface of the water and let the gas out, forming a cluster of bubbles on the surface of the water. He then took the lighter out of the water, stepped back and tossed a lit match into the basin. The bubbles burst into flames. Tony grinned at the result.

Rikku was in a chipper mood. She didn't think to offer Tyler a bribe. After all, no one was coming for her. (Insert the maniacal laughter here.)
