Leadership, Thursday, Period 1, Class 7 (10/23/08)

"Today we're talking about problem solving," Nathan said. "As a leader, this is something you're going to have to do a lot. Step one may seem obvious, but it's something many leaders fail to do: accurately define the problem. Let's say someone comes up to you and says that they can't finish building a bridge because they ran out of money. Your people need that bridge built so you approve a higher budget. Does that solve the problem? What if the reason why the project was running out of money was because someone was stealing it? Or mismanaging the construction? Or because nobody researched to find out that you were building a bridge in the worst possible location?

"This is why the first step of problem solving is asking questions. What are the details of the problem? What's going on? Why is it happening? What do other people think about the situation?"

Nathan handed out cards with pictures on them. "Put together, all these cards tell a story. You each get one. You're not allowed to show anyone what your card is. Your assignment is to find out as much as you can about the story. Go around to your fellow students and ask them about their cards. What's on them? What's going on? Are their cards similar to yours? I'll give you a hint that they're numbered, so you may want to seek out those who have cards close to your number first, but that's not a requirement.

"Get as many details as you can. I'm here if you have any questions."

Find out what's on each others' cards. None of the pictures are dirty, though that could depend on one's imagination Bender we're looking at you

Joan studied her card. She wasn't entirely sure how this was supposed to work, but she was willing to give it a whirl.

"Can I actually describe it?" Joan asked. "Or am I supposed to give you hints?"

She and her mun were a little confused.

Momoko approached with a smile. "Hi! I'm Momoko! May I ask what number your card is?"

"Hi, Momoko. I'm Joan," she replied, smiling back. "My card is number nineteen. What about you?"

Ben stared at his card, looking confused. Why would three people try to fit on a shaved bantha?

"Hey, Ben," Turtle flagged him down a little with her card. "What've you got? I'll share mine if you share yours."

"Hello!" Momoko wandered over and gave a small wave. "I'm Momoko! So. Is your card any more helpful than mine? In figuring out the story, that is."

Tony stared at his card. Then he flipped it over and stared again. Nope, still not making any sense.

"Let me guess," Ben said with a smile, "four monkeys dancing in hats."

Tony laughed. "That would make more sense than what I've got. Do you have monkeys?"

Agnes blinked at her card. That... looked like Djelibeybian? Maybe?

Turtle's nose wrinkled a little as she looked over her card. It reminded her annoyingly of Westing and his clues, but they'd hopefully be less obnoxious and not lead to as pointless as an answer as America the Beautiful.

"Hey, Turtle," Joan said, making an effort to be nice to her follow StuCo rep. "What's on your card?"

"Turtle!" Momoko waved a cheery hello. "My card is weird, what about yours?" She paused. "Well, it isn't really weird, since it's a card and that's not weird for a card to be, but what's on it is weird."

Bender turned his card round and again. The picture remained stubbornly static and flat.

"Lousy two-dimensional picture can bit my shiny metal- Whoa," Bender noticed the slightly blurred graffiti and tried engaging his zoom.

Curse you, real life resolution!

"What number is your card?" Joan asked. She figured the numbers had to be the key. She just wasn't sure how or why.

Momoko was grinning madly. She hadn't yet had a chance to really meet the not-Bumblebee robot student and she was excited to do so now. "Hi! I'm Momoko! It's nice to finally get a chance to talk to you!"
