Physics with trees, Period 1, 22 Oct '08

It was a heavy-jacketed and bundled up Mohinder that was pacing about the hillside clearing that the Danger Shop door opened up onto.

He handed out packs to each of the students, saying, "I hope you're all wearing your walking shoes today."

"Navigation," Mohinder said. "As with anything else knowing how to get where we're going is a fundamental starting point. By now we have a number of alternatives. If you'll open your packs you'll find maps, compass and a GPS unit." He picked up his own and tapped the side, hoping the Danger shop programming would give an accurate positioning, before he went on to cover each of the three navigational tools.

"Your starting point's here," said Mohinder. He pointed south-east. "And the first point you have to reach is that way. Good orienteering!"

Karal listened intently, his recorder running, nodding occasionally.

:You don't need all that when you have a Firecat,: Altra grumbled, and Karal hid a smile. "That would be cheating," he whispered back, and Altra snorted.

Inara listened and took careful notes, wishing she'd worn a warmer coat.

Rikku shivered and took notes. Stupid cold weather.

This was surprisingly difficult for Karal. He didn't want to simply let Altra find the way, because it really would be cheating, but he couldn't lead without risking falling flat on his face. He also couldn't refer to the map and compass without stopping to hold it low for Altra to see.

The less said about his attempt to carry Altra, hold him so he could see the map and compass, and hold the map and compass so they could be seen by him, the better.

Thankfully, his excellently trained memory didn't fail him, so he memorised what he saw along the compass point, and called out directions to Altra as they walked. It was wobbly, it was awkward, but they made it past all three points in the end.

:Next time,: Altra said firmly, :we Jump.:

Inara decided to try working lower tech, using only the map and compass. She got turned around once or twice, and it turned out the compass was more useful to her than the map, but she eventually got to all three points.

She was dying for a cup of tea by the end of the exercise, though.

Okay. This was way easier from higher up, navigating from the co-pilot's seat, but Rikku was gonna give it her darnedest anyway.

Once she got the hang of the map, she didn't have much trouble. Though she cursed the weather pretty frequently.
