Hunting 101 - Class 7 (Tuesday period 5)

When the students come in they saw a number of items laid out at the front of the room. Those who had some experience with such things would recognise a portable electrical crucible, as well as clamps and molds and what looks like some bars of silver. There were also several handouts for them to take laid out beside the sign in sheet.

"Today," John began where everyone was seated, "we're going to be moving away from ghosts and haunted objects into more solid supernatural things. Specifically, today we're going to be looking at shapeshifters.

"Now before I start, I want to emphasise that not all shapeshifters are things you need to be hunting -- around here especially. Changing shape alone isn't bad or dangerous; it's when people start dying that a hunt is needed. So when I'm talking about hunting shapeshifters, it's the ones that are attacking and killing people that I'm referring to. Not the student who turns into a pony or a puppet -- or a child -- for the weekend.

"The most common shapeshifter at least in these parts is probably the werewolf, although it's by no means the only one. The one handout I gave you has a few other examples and the cultures they originated in, but it's by no means comprehensive. For instance, a couple of years back, I had a hunt in Nashville that turned out to be some kind of ratwoman. So this list is a good place to start when looking for information, but it shouldn't be where you stop.

"Now, not all shapeshifters are contagious but enough are that you should always take precautions. Do your utmost to avoid being bitten as that is the most common way the infection spreads." He paused and looked around the room before continuing in a serious voice. "If you do get bitten, you need to treat the wound as soon as possible. Wash it out with an infusion of wolfsbane in holy water. It'll hurt like a sunofabitch and depending on how bad the infection is, it might even smoke, but that's a lot better than turning into what you're hunting. But really, the best way to avoid that is to not get bit in the first place.

"Regardless of what kind of shapeshifter you're dealing with, there's one sure way to kill them: a silver bullet in the heart. If you don't use guns, a silver tipped arrow or crossbow quarrel will work just as well. Or, if you're in close, silver blades will do the job too. But silver bullets, like rocksalt cartridges, aren't something you can just buy at any ammo store, so you're probably going to have to make your own." John walked over to the table where the crucible and other items were set up. "The other handout you have there gives a brief description of how to go about it. And I'm about to give you a demonstration."

John demonstrated how to melt silver in the graphite crucible and to carefully pour it into the bullet molds, describing what he was doing as he did so. "It's basically the same procedure to make silver tipped arrows, just with a different shaped mold," he concluded. "If you want, you can all have a try at doing this, but be very careful. Molten metal is not something you want to be careless with." He looked out over the class. "That being said, who wants to try first?"

Hannibal did some doodling but that didn't mean he wasn't paying attention.

Johnny was taking notes.

Jack's notes were mostly doodles, with some relevant information thrown in.

Dōjima was taking diligent notes as she flipped through the handout, wondering if silver would be more effective against witches than the plain lead.

A note found its way to Yurika's desk during the lecture.

How does it feel to be back in school? - R

Which ... wasn't really what he wanted to know, but he suspected he'd get a glare if he asked flat-out if she was all right.

It still got him a mini-glare, more exasperation than anger, since Yurika was rather sure she knew what he was hinting at.

Wishing I'd blown off Skywalker's class, why does the man ask questions if he doesn't actually want them answered?

He'd probably earned a mini-glare, though he returned it with an exasperated look of his own. Was it so wrong to worry?

What was it this week? There were some when I swore he was directing his questions right at me.

It's a hard class.

No, it wasn't wrong to worry, but there wasn't anything to worry about.

To kill evil old man or not to kill evil old man. Choices choices. Dōjima tapped her pencil for a moment before sketching out a frowning stick-figure waving a sword. He doesn't like it when you disagree with him.

Romeo scanned the note then closed his eyes, thinking back to the winter before. Think I said you had to kill old guy, he jotted. He doesn't like disagreement, no. He left off that he thought Anakin was usually right anyhow.

He added a mustache and beard to the stick figure, for the hell of it, and tossed the note back to her.

His artistic contributions earned him a giggle and a grin, and Yurika winked at him. Me too, she mouthed, before quickly writing down the rest and passing the note back.

What are you doing after class?

Firekeeper, as usual, was not taking notes. She was, however, paying very close attention. She knew well enough how attempts at shapeshifting had gone in her world, that people in another world apparently succeeded at this deeply troubled her.

Momoko listened to the lecture, happy to be getting further away from ghosts. Shapeshifters, huh? She wondered if she counted as a shapeshifter herself.

Hannibal hadn't ever made his own ammunition before. He'd seen plenty of it, handled plenty but never made it.

He managed not to burn himself even if his hand shook once in an effort to keep it still.

He still preferred just buying his own ammo.

[identity profile] fantastic-torch.livejournal.com 2008-10-21 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Johnny melted his own silver and hoped that Mr. Winchester didn't care. Not like he could get burned. And he was very careful, always.

Lion-o was very careful. He thought it was kind of cool to make his own bullets and made a mental note to mention it to Panthro.

Jack was exceedingly careful with everything, until he got a tickle in his nose that wouldn't stop. In fact, it turned into a sneeze and he knocked over the crucible and righted it as quickly as possible, hoping no one noticed.

Yurika quickly pulled her hair back to keep it out of her face as she worked, and set about very carefully crafting her bullets.

Momoko was giving it her best, and she managed to not to burn herself. The table suffered a bit as she filled her mold, as did the floor, and she overflowed the mold cavity. But she had bullets when done!

Re: Talk to John

[personal profile] heromaniac 2008-10-22 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Momoko had to ask, now that the thought had occurred to her.

"Mr Winchester? If a person can transform into another person, is that still shapeshifting? I understood what you meant about people here and that not being shapshifting, but if someone transforms into someone else as a part of a thing that's not Fandom?"
heromaniac: (thinking)

Re: Talk to John

[personal profile] heromaniac 2008-10-22 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
She nodded. "Huh. Okay. That makes sense. And I'm not evil, so I don't need to worry about that part. Unless people don't take the time to know me, or maybe they meet me after someone steals one of my snacks. I can get pretty mean when I've got a food grudge. But that doesn't make me EVIL evil, just mad, so I should be okay. Right?"
