Newspaper Staff Meeting, 4 pm, Journalism Room

Way easier to start your second meeting as editor. Especially when the first issue actually went out and all. Total failure: averted.

The baked goods and coffee were totally in celebration of the averted-failure. And possibly as a bribe for people to show up, since they were on break and all.

"Pros and cons of long distance relationships?" Lee tried. "I'm kinda getting experience with that now. Might be worth a paragraph or two."

"Ouch," Rikku nodded. "I've kinda ... been there. Sucks, doesn't it? Are you okay?"

"Oh yeah, I'm fine," he said and he was. Sometimes. "It's working out so far even if it does kinda suck. But yeah, I'm fine. Graduation's coming up and all and who knows if some other people will have to make that choice."

"That's good," she said. "For you guys, I mean. And -- you're right. People leave, and sometimes they try to work it out, and sometimes one or the other goes, hey, distance, that's gonna be rough, let's not. So ... having a nice list like that would really help, I think."

"I'll see what I can do," he said. "If it doesn't come together, I'll write an article on how to get your arms like mine or some other filler piece."

"That is always an acceptable alternative," Rikku grinned. "Or just pictures of your arms."

What? He had awesome arms.

"I was thinking," Turtle offered with a small, please-ignore-that-I'm-pink smile, "that, especially since I failed at the first edition, this week, I'll not fail, put out an exceptionally good article, and interview one of the owners of the new businesses in town. It would be a great way to promote economic activity on the island."

"You didn't fail," Rikku said quickly. "I'm totally not expecting everybody to have an article every single week. I mean, heck, if you guys did, I'd throw 'em all in, but -- you know. We have classes and stuff going on. You know?"

The look on Turtle's face might have potentially made Rikku think that she was speaking that al Bhed language of her, or had sprouted another head.

She did know that she was talking to Turtle Wexler, right? Turtle If-I-Don't-Do-Fifty-Million-Things-in-One-Week-I'm-a-Slacker Wexler?

She shook her head a little. "Either way," she said. "This week, you'll have an article. It will be awesome. I haven't decided which business yet, but it will happen." She nodded determinedly, as if wild horses couldn't drag her away from an article this week.

"Awesome," Rikku grinned. "I can't wait to see it. And one of the new businesses would be great, since a lot of people haven't been around to see them yet. I don't even know some of what the new-island has."

"I have a list!" Turtle said, with a sudden burst, sitting up and already reaching for her bag. "Several, in fact, including current projections on business sales and future sales, as well as pie charts involving the sort of products and services offered that, and some graphs comparing those products and services to the ones available at Turtle & Canary."

"First, I have to say the paper was awesome, but the little squirrels last night were complaining about the lack of Word Jumble or something?" Toby said, oh so proud to have seen his byline.

"Your horoscopes were great," she grinned. "Ooooh, the Jumbles? Peter used to do those, and he left. They were neat. I did one in Al Bhed once."

(*headdesk* I thought I pinged back to this, and I didn't. GO ME.)

"Sorry about my article," Gwen apologised. "There were some complications." Like it going straight into the shredder when she'd read it on Monday and discovered it was all about John Sheppard having VD.

"Totally okay," Rikku said. "This weekend ... oh my gosh. I'd say we all went insane except that doesn't explain the random pregnancies and evil twins that just happened out of nowhere. So messed up. Do you have an idea, for next week?"

(.... Iiiiii thought I pinged back to this, too, and didn't. WTF, self. W..T..F.)

"I think I'll give gossip a miss, just for a week or two," Gwen said. "Maybe some sort of film review? Or tips to make that Parent's Weekend less stressful?"

That sounded much safer.

He was just promoted from Brigadier Chatting. Way to go, General!

Cal, still pondering if he could work the color angle or if he should hold his guns to see if anything else weird propped up for his purposes, sat spinning a donut thoughtfully around his blue finger.

Rikku was trying not to giggle. "You're kinda reminding of this song," she said.

"If it's the one I'm thinking of," which it might not be; weren't there a gazillion songs about being blue? And probably a gazillion more were made in the thirty-two year gap between Cal's time and now, "and you start singing it, I'm throwing this donut at you."

"Are there 'da ba dee's?" Rikku asked, as innocently as she could muster.

"Uhhh, no," Cal admitted, eying Rikku carefully, "but it sounds like, if you start singing it, I'm still going throw a donut at you. Fair warning."

"What was your blue song?" Rikku asked. "Now I'm all curious."

"To be honest," Cal said with a frown, "I don't think it's any particular song. It's kind of, like, a mash-up of any song I've ever heard before with the word 'blue' in it."

Who is awesome and might have even brought knives.

Ghanima always had knives concealed on her person, but they were not for sharing with students.

Regardless, she was there if anyone had any questions.
