Hands-On Art, Class #6, Period 1

"Welcome back, guys," Lily greeted the class once they'd arrived. "Hope everyone had a nice weekend. Plus Monday. There's really no good opening on a Tuesday, you know? Anyway, today we're working on landscapes, so I hope you all brought in your pictures. Landscapes might be the simplest idea that's sometimes just really hard to actually do. It's not just 'draw this house and clouds and a sun' like you did in kindergarten, though I have seen a couple of kindergartners with some mighty fine talent in my time. No, you pretty much look outside and paint that. It's scenery. It's lakes and mountains and forests and trees. You got some experience the other week with the video and all the happy trees, so this is a good way to put those to use.

"And really, the reason this is harder than it looks is because the lakes and mountains and blah blah blah can be hard to get right, and if you're a perfectionist you're going to probably want to spend a lot of time wanting to just take your paintbrush and go like this to the canvas," Lily said, gesturing wildly with her arm. "Don't do that. I know it's hard to grade on artistic expression, but that's just sort of an emotional seizure and that'll knock you down a few points.

"So have fun, remember you can turn in anything from last week you still owe, and you don't need to bring anything in next week. Have at it."

This didn't really require notes but that didn't mean Ned wasn't paying attention.

There had been a mention of happy trees, which meant Katchoo was beating her forehead quietly but steadily against her desk for a bit there. She really kinda just wanted to get to the landscape-painting.

Claire doodled a meadow and trees in her notebook as she listened.

Yes! Happy little trees! This made Cal a happy little artist.

Even if his brain was working toward very different directions with the suggestion of a landscape.

Not more happy trees. Wendy considered whether she could write off destroying any record of those shows as an act of Middleman protection.

Sokka had already started doodling a house and clouds and a sun in his notebook before Lily started talking, and he hastily scribbled it out when she said not to do that.

Liir was listening, but mostly he was thinking about the landscapes he knew from home.

Inara listened to the lecture, anxious to get started.

Jenny tried and failed to remember the last time she'd seen a tree that looked happy.

Ned had brought in a picture of snowy mountains from a book he'd found. He hadn't seen snow since last winter and he kind of missed it. Of course, his mountains were a little lopsided and his snow was kind of chunky but he still liked what he was making.

Peyton was working on that image of a tropical beach - looking out from the trees toward a white sandy beach, turquoise waters... It actually made you feel like you were right there.

Claire frowned at her easel for a moment, trying to decide on how to start, before she began copying her scene of mountains around a lake.

Katchoo had brought in a handful of snapshots taken on the beach in Hana, either by herself or Emma. Neither of them were in any of the pictures, not even as a stray hand or foot; even the negatives had been carefully culled.

The snapshots had been taken over several days in the sunshine, but after Katchoo assembled them into a patchwork panoramic shot, the landscape she was painting was past nightfall, and stormy, and . . . were those waves crashing on the shore, or an oncoming army, or both?

Peter worked on a picture of some of his favorite parts of the countryside by the Petrellis' Westchester house.

Although a little bit of uncertainty tugged at Cal as to whether or not it would count as a landscape, he held firmly in his mind that urban landscape still had the word landscape in it. Plus, there was still water. There was still trees. Cal meticulously worked on his image of the Detroit River, Canadian skyline on the other side with the Ambassador Bridge an accent to one side of the image.

Wendy had downloaded an image from the memory of her BTRS scanner, and was currently painting a happy landscape, with happy trees, and a happy lake, and a happy overturned RV, and a happy Peruvian Flying Pike.

Sokka had brought in a picture of the island that he handwavily took from the dorm roof at sunset one day.

Aside from the fact that the picture itself wasn't quite level and the lighting was bad, Sokka sucked at painting. This should be interesting.

There was a massive hulking fortress in the distance, trees and mountains and crags and grassland, looking illfit together but that was how it was, how it'd been.

Kiamo Ko. He wondered what Fiyero would think of his work.

Alice didn't have a picture with her; she didn't have one to her name. She would try to do this from memory, and if it was wrong, so be it.

Wonderland made for a strange sort of landscape.

Inara worked from an old photograph of Shinon, taken outside the Companion House. Anyone looking for differences would probably notice primarily that it looked much cleaner and higher tech. And the buildings were very, very white against the sky.

Bender cued up a shot of Pluto's icefields and set about reproducing a fairly accurate if flat rendition of the ice and scrubs.

The stray plants straggled lopsidely out of the foreground, though.

Jenny painted from a painted picture postcard of the landscape outside Vienna.

...the postcard was an Adolf Hitler original, but she kind of hoped no one would notice that detail.
