Physics, Monday, Class #5, Period 4

Anyone who was paying attention might notice that Sam looked considerably more rested and relaxed this week. They'd probably also notice a few mini pool tables set up on the desks. "Good afternoon, and welcome to what I hope will be an informative class. Today we'll be discussing Isaac Newton's laws of motion, getting ever closer to our goal of exploring relativity after midterms, which I'm sure you're all waiting for with baited breath."

She was kidding, mostly.

"There are three basic laws of motion, according to Newton, who used them to describe the acceleration of massive particles. The first is that of inertia, which is basically that an object, once in motion, will stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force. Or, if you throw a baseball in a zero gravity and no friction situation, like in outer space, it will just keep going until the end of time, or until it hit something, whichever comes first. The second law gets more into computations of dynamics." She wrote several equations on the board. "They all boil down, basically, to F=ma, where F, or the force exerted upon an object, is equal to the product of the mass of the object, or M times the acceleration of the object, or A. Time can also be a factor, but we'll get into that later in the semester. The third law is also something you've probably heard before--for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

"Basically, if you transfer energy to an object at rest by hitting it, it will then move in another direction at a certain rate of speed, based upon such variables as your aim, point of contact, and the power used to hit it."

"We'll get into laws of planetary motion next week, so please read those handouts. For the rest of class, I'd like you to pair up with another student, and play a few games of pool. What works, what doesn't? Why doesn't it work? I'd like a one-page write-up of your experiences for next week. Does anyone have any questions?"

"The game pool has nothing to do with the thing pool," Ichigo clarified.

"Then why does it use the same word?" Worf inquired. "It seems rather foolish."

"I don't know?" he stared at the guy. Was he serious? "Ask the guy who named them!"

"I will be happy to ask," Worf replied. "Who is he?"

Ichigo snorted, deciding he couldn't be serious. "Funny. Come on. Have you played this before?"

"No. I have not," Worf replied. "Does it involve spearing someone with these sticks?"

"You're from a peace loving world, aren't you?" Ichigo asked warily. "No, it's to move the balls around the table."

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fine," Worf replied. "Throw the ball at me and I will knock it to the table. How does one score points?"

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] first-guardian.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ichigo was trying not to laugh. "It's more that the balls are already on the table and you need to knock them into one of the side pockets using the white ball.

Worf glared at the table. "Fine. Show me," he ordered.

"You could ask nicely," Ichigo suggested as he racked up the balls.

Worf held back on a glare. He crossed his arms and tried to be... polite.

"Please."

There. Close enough.

"Much better," Ichigo smirked and he straightened up. "Okay, first you have to break. Which just means that you get to break the balls apart and spread them so you can play. It's easy enough since it's hard to miss."

He grabbed the white ball and placed it on the dot, then leaned forward as he explained how you were supposed to use the cue and demonstrated it. Soon the balls scattered across the table, sadly enough none of the went into the pockets. "Your turn."

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Worf studied his cue. "Would it be easier to break the balls if I just beat them with my stick?" he asked gruffly.

Re: Play Pool

"Probably," Ichigo leaned against the side of the table. "But it would be against the rules."

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then there is no violence in the game?"

Worf looked somewhat disappointed.

"No," Ichigo was just going to be amused. He imagined Kenpachi Zaraki would look a bit like Worf if he found this out. "Well, unless the players get really worked up and one decides to punch the other guy or the judges. I don't think that happens a lot, though."

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"How unfortunate," Worf replied and then leaned across the table in imitation of what Ichigo did.

"So I would tap the ball with the end of my stick. Correct?"

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] first-guardian.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep, and try to hit another ball so it will go into one of the pockets," Ichigo explained, watching Worf.

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hmph."

Worf took the cue stick and hit the white ball with considerable force sending it flying through the air and off the table.

"I assume I do not score any points with that?" he asked acting like he meant to do that the entire time.

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] first-guardian.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ichigo was really glad he wasn't standing on that end of the table and he decided from now on, he should go stand behind Worf. "No, not really. Not bad for a first shot, though."

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hardly," Worf replied. "However I will still endeavor to beat you. Take your turn."

And then as an afterthought.

"Please."

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] first-guardian.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ichigo grinned, kind of liking Worf even if he wasn't sure why. "Well, I was thinking it could have been worse and you could have hit the student at the other table," he said as he picked up the ball from the floor.

He placed it back in the right spot and then considered his next shot. There was plenty to chose from after just breaking the game and the ball went neatly into the pocket. "You get to play until you miss," he explained to Worf as he lined up his next shot. This time he missed and he motioned for Worf to go again.

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"I see," Worf said taking another shot that unfortunately put too much spin on the ball and went in another direction than he intended. "Very well. I have missed. Go ahead."

Re: Play Pool

[identity profile] first-guardian.livejournal.com 2008-10-06 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think you need to put a little less force into it," Ichigo advised as he considered his next shot. "Just take it more slowly."
