Hunting 101 -- Class 5 (Tuesday, period 5)

When the students came in, they found the usual set up, with a bunch of handouts sitting beside the sign in sheet.

"Good afternoon," John said to his students when everyone had taken their seats. "Today we're not going to be talking about ghosts or demons or any other kind of creature or entity. Today we're going to talk about curses. The handout gives a definition and a brief look at various types of curses.

"There's also some information some examples on some cursed objects for you to look over." John paused to give them a chance to read through the information.

"Not all cursed objects are like that. Some are very mild, the equivalent of a mosquito bite, something you could just overlook as a run of bad luck. Some are worse, deadlier. There are ways that are supposed to cleanse an object or place, to break the curse." John paused. "Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. As you read, there's a wide variety of the type of curses. To successfully break a curse you really need to know how it was cast and by whom. And sometimes, often, that information is difficult to come by. Especially with older items. In that case, when you can't find exactly the origin of a cursed item, the best thing you can do is get out of its way." He looked around the class meeting various students' eyes. "If it's a piece of land that is cursed, you clear out and make sure anyone else there does as well.

"If it's a cursed object, try to handle it as little as possible. Silk, salt and iron can all make it safer to handle an object, but nothing will block every curse. You can try to destroy the object, but often that's not going to work. Your best bet is going to be put it somewhere it won't be handled, won't be a threat. If you know what you're doing or know someone who does, you can make a curse box to contain it." John gestured at the wooden box with markings painted on it that was sitting on his desk. "If you don't, then you don't take any chances. You find a spot as far away from people as you can and bury it." He smiled grimly. "If you can't get out of its way, you get it out of yours."

John got up and paced the front of the room as he continued talking. "For the next class, I'm not going to lay out for you what you need to know and need to do. You're getting the exact same information that I usually have at the beginning of a hunt. In fact you already have it. That's the rest of those handouts. Your homework is to pair up and go over that information, and plan out what you're going to do next Wednesday. I'm available if you have any questions or want any advice, but you'll have to figure out what you're after on your own.

John smiled at them. "So you better get started."

[OOC: wait for OCD's up, have at it!]

Romeo shivered as he listened. Maybe the Montagues had been cursed...

Throughout the lecture, Wendy thought of Cecil and his tuba. Not fondly.

Curses were something all too familiar to the wolves. Firekeeper wondered how the rest of the Shield children were doing now that their mother was dead.

Considering what had happened to her, Annja was a firm believer in curses and she was taking notes on what the teacher was saying.

The mention of cursed objects reminded Lion-o of something he'd heard Jaga talking about once, the Sword of Plundarr. Fortunately, it was buried deep somewhere on Thundera and he didn't have to worry about.

Or so he thought...

Momoko passed a quick note to Lion-o:

Lion-o ~I talked to my big sister Rikku and she says she's okay with teaching us how to use guns. Want to? ~Momoko

Lion-o grinned as he scribbled his reply.

Yes! When?

Hee! Momoko was still bouncing over the fact that the class wasn't about ghosts and seeing Lion-o's note, she took a moment from the lecture to respond.

Later today, if you're okay with that? Sorry if timing is off but wanted to do it sooooooon!

I'll be there!

Today was just great. First he got to cook at work (under the close supervision of Snarf) and now he was going to learn how to fire a gun!

Momoko got the reply and smiled.

"Cool!" She said, then realised she'd said it aloud and slapped her hand over her mouth. She looked around for a moment, hoping no one had heard her.

Buffy was listening, but she wasn't too keen on the homework. She was so much more used to working alone.

Class wasn't about ghosts! Momoko bounced in her seat, happily.
