Hands-On Art, Class #5, Period 1

"Hey, guys. Glad you're all back and your correct genders and everything," Lily greeted the class when everyone had arrived. She was still wearing heels. Her back was killing her but her calves looked hot. "Hope in all the confusion you remembered to have a subject in mind for this week's project. And if not... well, just don't tell me about it, it's really easy to fake. Don't tell anyone I told you that."

"Today we're doing still life. This is like the Van Goh from last week," she said, passing out some handouts depicting some well-known pieces, which was to say they got pretty pictures of fruit and flowers. "Still life is basically something inanimate, and no, not necessarily alive. They just call it that. If it's going to run away from you and bark at the door when a car drives by, or if you have to yell at it for scratching its nose while you're working, you're doing still life wrong.

"They also don't have to be boring. Sure, you've seen plenty of bowls of apples before, but like I've said a million times- or like, five- it's all about making it your own. Besides, boring can be pretty in art galleries. So you know the rules, use what you want, if you need to turn it in next week, awesome, and anyone who needs to turn anything in to me can do so. Oh! And next week we're working on landscapes. Bring in a picture from around Fandom, of home, print off a picture off the Internet, whatever, just bring it on in. Okay, get to work."

Katchoo, having now lived the still life, tried not to twitch too much over the handouts.

Making sure his crutches were set up against the desk carefully and in easy reach, Cal drew all over his handouts. Happy little trees. He liked those.

Liir didn't quite understand what the point was, since he knew about pictures, but he supposed that this kind of art could serve a purpose even if it might not be the same one others might consider to be important.

Alice wondered if there was a term for a still life that was disrupted by one's cat attempting to eat one's arrangement.

Peyton started work on a picture she'd composed with some of her records, her mp3 player and a variety of other music related items 'posed' together.

Ned had a picture of Digby sleeping. It was the only time he was still and Ned thought, since he was all one color, it wouldn't be as hard to mess it up.

Katchoo started out painting something that -- well, she wasn't sure yet what she'd add to it, but the focal point seemed to be a shattered mirror for some reason.

Claire had taken a trip to the mainland yesterday and talked her way into a funeral parlor owned by a guy who knew her dad to take a snapshot to work from.

Her subject (http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder/artwork/artwork4.shtml) might seem just a little morbid, but it was definitely still.

Angela had picked up a selection of bits of fabric to draw.

The way she'd scrunched it up gave texture, and there was all the colour variety she could want.

If only Cal had any idea at all just what art critics might make of his still life with bananas and sea shells.

Peter worked on a drawing of his bookbag leaning against his desk. He wanted to see if he could get all those folds and shadows.

Sokka emptied his bag onto his desk -- notebooks, candy bars, pencils, candy wrappers, a few dogeared poetry anthologies, more candy wrappers, etc. In the center of it all, he placed his notebook with the notes from today's class. "Don't have to be boring" was written extra-large on the page, underlined, and circled.

He began to paint.

Liir had a picture of the broom and the cloak in his mind and couldn't quite dismiss the tiny mechanical horse he'd been given from the frame. It stood, between one step and another, in the scene he'd set up inside his own mind, and thus he started, considering how he'd express the endless black of the cloak, all the things held within it's folds, and delighting somewhat at the tiny buds that even now lived on the brush of the broom.

Inara had brought her calligraphy ink and pen with her, a scroll of paper, an empty mug, a red scarf and royal blue pillow with her, and she set them on the desk, trying to work out the most pleasing arrangement.

She began to sketch, trying to get the details as correct as she could, so it was pretty slow going.

Lola drew her boot.

Yeah, she'd totally forgotten about the assignment.

Hmmm. She really could use a new pair of these. . . .

Jenny propped a pack of cigarettes up against a bottle of scotch, with a rocks glass on its side next to it and one lone cigarette lying in the foreground of the composition. Then she started painting, wondering if maybe she could just sort of add in a Union Jack.

Ah, art.
