There had been a ~~handwavey~~ notice sent out ahead of time that today's class would be held in the Danger Shop. When the students arrived, they would have found Mike waiting with a big empty barrel and a lot of sandbags.

"From the beginning of time, securing safe and convenient access to water has been necessary for human life," said Mike, moving right into his lecture. "It's very simple. Without drinking water, you die. Without clean water, you also die. Water is also essential for the survival of crops and livestock so you can eat. Therefore, civilization tended to stay close to areas with access to fresh water. As populations got bigger, it meant that everyone was piled up on top of each other because you couldn't move away and still have access to water. I'll pass around this hand-out about the history of water supply and distribution, but we also have some exercises to demonstrate the challenges that face engineers when it came to water."

Naomi read over the handout and took down notes.

"So, there's two challenges we'll look at today. First up, what happens when you have too much water," said Mike. He flipped the switch and a raging river (http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2008-09/42353870.jpg) started running through the Danger Shop.

"The barrel is your house. You need to find a way to keep the river from flooding your house and destroying everything you own. I recommend the sandbags because that's all you've got," he said. "Oh, and be careful. Like any fast-moving body of water, you might get swept away by the water or run into floating debris. If that happens, the simulation will reset and you'll have to start over from the beginning."

"So, now that you've built your sandbag wall to protect your barrel, we've got another problem," said Mike. "The sanitation department got wiped out by the flood. You need to collect water in the barrel to save for cooking, drinking, and everything else you need with water. Oh, and there's no buckets around anywhere in the Danger Shop. However, I'll give you some supplies that can be used creatively ~~once you ping in~~."

Naomi had not gotten swept away by the flood and was still there to TA.

He's around after class, though he could use a towel.

For the activities, you can mod your own success/failure, or Mike can throw obstacles at you.

As for detentions, Mike is a really easy-going guy and won't hand them out for things like talking in class. He will give detentions for refusing to participate or not completing assignments. If you want a detention, let me know here and it can be arranged. As always, you can handwave the activities and assignments.

Incidentally, driving through flooded roadways (http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2008-09/42336019.jpg) is bad (http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2008-09/42335886.jpg). Fortunately, the flooding wasn't all that bad where I am, but it was amusing to watch how many people lost their cars.
