Physics, Monday, Class #3, Period 4

Sam was probably looking a little tired as the students entered, but that didn't stop her from smiling at them, even as she held to her coffee mug like a lifeline. "I know I promised that we'd address Einsteinian definitions of gravity, but I've decided that makes more sense to discuss when we get into relativity. Today we'll be looking at the laws of thermodynamics. Traditionally, there have been three laws, but fairly recently a fourth--or zeroeth--has been added." She wrote four equations on the board and passed out some handouts explaining the laws in more significant detail.

"So, why do we care?" She paced back and forth in front of the class, gesturing with her coffee and perhaps jostling a person or two who might be dozing. "Because it explains how heat and energy work both within a single system and between systems. They explain how one event will always have a ripple effect, even if its ultimate result is completely unpredictable."

"For the rest of class, I'd like you to work on the experiment that's detailed in your handout packets. You may work either alone or in teams of two. Please be careful using the bunsen burners and make sure to wear the safety goggles at all times. I'll expect to see your graphs and charts at the end of class. Just leave them on the desk before you go."

After putting the safety goggles on, Eve was more than content to play around -- though properly so -- with the experiment.

A partner was totally welcome, though.

Kevin read the sheet. Well, he attempted to read the sheet; some of the words seemed to blur together, and every time he attempted to make sense of some of the charts, his heart rate would increase.

Maybe he would just play with the fire.

He looked around, hoping someone would come over and be his partner.

Romeo gave Kevin a hopeful look. "Did you need a partner?"

[OOC: Home but will be on and off.]

"Dude, that would be awesome," Kevin replied. "I don't really have, like, a clue, you know?"

Romeo bent his head over his lab worksheet. "I'm not entirely certain this is in English to begin with," he admitted. "I think we're trying to melt something."

"Oh, is that it?" Kevin's face brightened. "I mean, I know how to melt things."

Maybe this physics stuff wasn't as hard as he thought it was.

Rodney glared at John as he set up the experiment. "You better stay awake for this, or I won't be responsible when your hair catches on fire."

"Hey, I'm completely awake now," John said, hopping up to sit on the counter top next to the experiment. "So what are we doing, anyway?"

"We're changing the state of matter to illustrate the laws of thermodynamics. You see..." he launched into a detailed explanation that John may or may not wish to interrupt.

Of course John interrupted, but not until the end. He had to distill all of Rodney's words into one simple phrase. "So we're determining a cooling curve. Why didn't you just say so?"

"Well, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to dumb it down for you too much," he huffed. "Would you like to begin?" Rodney asked mockingly.

"Sure. Let's get this burner started," John replied, snapping his glasses into place and hopping off the counter so Rodney couldn't set his rear on fire.

"Be careful with that, I'm rather fond of my eyebrows," Rodney cautioned. "You must play the game, but you can't win," he said to himself as he got ready to record their results.

"Can't break even, can't quit the game," John added, finishing the chant. What? He knew stuff.

"Exactly," Rodney automatically agreed. "Wait," he paused with a hint of confusion in his voice. "You know that." Now, his voice was mostly filled with wonder.

Sokka put on the goggles -- very conscious of how dorky they made him look -- and experimented with turning the flame on the burner up and down while waiting for a partner.

"This is so cool," Rikku bounced. "Okay. No setting things on fire that shouldn't be. Got it?"

"Yeah," Sokka sighed. "I got it." He turned the flame higher. "Look! It's melting!"

"Hey!" Rikku flailed. "That's not how you were supposed to do it! We were supposed to heat it slowly so we could -- turn that down again!"

"Huh?" Sokka asked, flipping through the handouts again. "No, we're supposed to cool it slowly, I thought? It didn't say anything about how fast to heat it?"

He wafted the smell of the burning gas towards his nostrils. "Mmmmmm... Smells like SCIENCE!"

Amazingly, even with the goggles, Chad's eyes eye still hidden behind his hair.

That did not deter him from looking around for maybe a partner to help him with the experiment.

Bumblebee pulled the safety goggles on with a minimum of trouble, though they didn't quite sit right, and then looked around for a partner.
