Sam was probably looking a little tired as the students entered, but that didn't stop her from smiling at them, even as she held to her coffee mug like a lifeline. "I know I promised that we'd address Einsteinian definitions of gravity, but I've decided that makes more sense to discuss when we get into relativity. Today we'll be looking at the laws of thermodynamics. Traditionally, there have been three laws, but fairly recently a fourth--or zeroeth--has been added." She wrote four equations on the board and passed out some handouts explaining the laws in more significant detail.

"So, why do we care?" She paced back and forth in front of the class, gesturing with her coffee and perhaps jostling a person or two who might be dozing. "Because it explains how heat and energy work both within a single system and between systems. They explain how one event will always have a ripple effect, even if its ultimate result is completely unpredictable."

"For the rest of class, I'd like you to work on the experiment that's detailed in your handout packets. You may work either alone or in teams of two. Please be careful using the bunsen burners and make sure to wear the safety goggles at all times. I'll expect to see your graphs and charts at the end of class. Just leave them on the desk before you go."

Physics provided John with so many things, but his post-lunch nap was a clear favorite. His head lolled way back and his jaw dropped open, causing him to snore a bit. Never mind the drool.

Rodney was diligently taking notes. Until he was distracted by the sound of god-awful snoring, that is. He was completely embarrassed to find that it was coming from his own lab partner. "Hey," he whispered as he reached over to poke John in the shoulder.

"Thermodynamics!" John started, leaning forward and automatically wiping at his damp chin.

"Ugh, and to think there are people out there who are crazy enough to believe that you're actually cool," Rodney commented incredulously.

"What?" John was confused by Rodney's assessment but shook it off. "Hey, I can't help it that if then statements about the transitive relation between temperature and three bodies lulls me into a nice dream state."

After a moment's pause, Rodney's head fell onto his desk.

John tilted his head and raised a curious eyebrow before settling in to see if he could reclaim that dream before the lecture was over.

Naomi was alert and took down detailed notes.

Kevin looked confused. He was actually trying to pay attention to the lecture, but got lost after about, oh, twelve seconds.

It kept Romeo awake, though he wasn't sure how much of this he understood. He was taking notes anyhow.

Tosh was taking as many detailed notes as possible even though she understood all of this.

Hoshi took lots of notes, more to keep herself awake and focused than anything else.

Sokka took detailed notes. Although the math was beyond him, the rest made sense enough. More or less.

Somewhat jokingly, he raised his hand. "So, if order is always supposed to decrease in a system, does that mean that evil dictators are scientifically, and not just morally, contrary to the laws of nature?"

"I think it depends on whether they're actually able to get the trains to run on time," she laughed, "so, ineffectual dictators are much more natural. In the same line, I can tell you that, categorically speaking, having a messy room, desk, or lab is a completely natural state of affairs."

"THANK you!" Sokka crowed. "Tell my sister that!"

"Just tell her you're achieving your entropic potential."

"I'm achieving all KINDS of potential!!!"

No sleeping on Chad's part, but he did get into a bit of zone with taking down notes. That was okay, though. They were just words now, but that's why you reviewed them later to make better sense of them.

Sam struggled to stay awake and take notes, but it was really hard.

Rikku was taking so many notes. And bouncing like crazy.
