After waiting for the last students to arrive, Tyler shut the classroom door and briskly handed out copies of the syllabus. "Good morning, glad to see you all came back," he said. "First, that's your syllabus for the semester and the class rules. Don't get too attached to the syllabus part -- I might get bored and change it. But you might wanna start thinking about your midterm. It's about six weeks off, and you're going to be designing and executing your own experiment for it. We'll talk more when that's closer."

He indicated the paper mache volcanoes set on a lab table. "Right, yesterday Ino and Rikku, your TAs, gave me a hand and built those model volcanoes. Today we're going to make them explode."

"What you're going to do is put a good palmful of baking soda into the water bottle inside the volcano, then slowly pour in about a cup of vinegar. You can tint the vinegar with food coloring if you want it to look more like real lava. This is a basic acid-base reaction -- the acid of the vinegar and the base of the baking soda react and release carbon dioxide. The result is ... well, you'll find out. But first, let me explain what an acid is and what a base is." He did so, presenting a brief ~~and handwavy~~ lecture.

"We only have six volcanoes, so you guys get to work in pairs. Let me know if you have questions."

She shrugged a bit, glancing sideways at him. "Busy, you know."

See? She could do casual. Really.

"Yeah, same here. School and all that."

The mun was wondering exactly where this Ino-Molly conversation was.

She rolled her eyes. "Michael," Ino said. "How many people have you talked to lately?"

"Uh..." He actually had to think about that. "Teachers in class, you... Liir and Lois?"

Yeah.

That would be Ino frowning at him.

"Hermitting."

"Not on purpose!" he protested.

As for the conversation with Molly, the mun would like to submit that he really was that clueless.

"Have you even, like, left your door open so people could come by?"

"People who know me can always come by. I don't want, like, random strangers wandering in."

"Once upon a time I was a random stranger," Ino pointed out.

"But you didn't come into my room uninvited."

"Then hang out in a common room or something, sometime!"

"I do." Beat. "Sometimes."

He's never really had his own space before.

"When?" Ino asked challengingly.

"...last week?"

Liar.

Ino just Looked at him.

Yeah, not so much with the believing of that.

"...God, you're as bad as Isabel. I could get this in Roswell and at least they'd be there."

"Nice."

If Ino could kill people with glares? Michael would be so so dead right now.

"I don't. Need. Nannying."

He's giving as good as he gets, the volcano forgotten.

"What would you call it, then, this obsession with hermitting every time I see you?" He's still glaring. "I just want to pass school."

"Do you spend all your time studying?" she scathed. "Because somehow I doubt it. Friends need time devoted to them too."

"You wouldn't know what I spend my time doing", he shot back. "Seeing as you didn't come see me either."

"When your door isn't open, I assume you'd rather not see anyone," she snapped.

"Besides," Ino said scathingly, "it's not like I'm not used to being ignored by guys. I keep busy instead of pining."
