Leadership: Thursday, Period 1, Class 2 (9/11/08)

"In last week's class gave us a snapshot of what we'll be covering over the rest of the semester," Nathan said as he passed around the day's handouts. "Good leaders are not mindless leaders. They are leaders who look at the angles and ask the basic questions. Should they be in charge? Why? How?

"Today we're going to start on the how." Nathan moved back to his desk. "As you can see in your handouts, there are different kinds of leadership styles. Some of you showed the styles that you're more comfortable with last week. In today's class I'd like you to pair up and embody these styles. Pick at least one each, and use those styles on each other. The leadership challenge that you're facing is whether or not there should be coffee available for next week's class. Doesn't matter what position you pick. Just use that leadership style to come to a decision and try to implement it.

"Two announcements before you get started," Nathan added. "First, Meg is going to be the TA for this class so if you need any help in that area talk to her. Second, Student Council Elections are coming up. As you can imagine that's pretty closely tied to what we're working on in class. So if anyone here tries out for Student Council, I will give you extra credit." Nathan grinned. "It's not a requirement that you win, only that you try. I have forms up here if anyone needs them."

"Practically forever," Turtle said with a wry grin. "Well, more like two years, but that's still quite a while, you know? Especially if you consider the high student turnover rate at this place, maaan."

"People don't stick around much?" Dor asked looking worried. "Is it that tough a school?"

"Not in the slightest," Turtle said, waving a hand dismissively, but then she seemed to regret her quick answer. "Well, I mean. I guess it depends on your definition of tough. I mean, I get much better grades here than I did my old school, but there's so much weird going on that some people might be put off by that, but you said you've been able to make things talk to you for as long as you could remember, so something tells me weird isn't going to be as much of an issue for you."

"Well it's still a little weird for me," Dor admitted thoughtfully. "It's not exactly like home but it still has a bit of Xanth in it. I guess with what I know it doesn't seem as extreme."

"As extreme?" Turtle just wanted to make sure she heard that right.

"Well where I'm from the jungles of Xanth have a varied plant life and monsters in it," Dor explained. "And certainly not as many people."

Dor's chair snorted in amusement. "Did you have furniture too, you hick?"

"Sure," Dor replied ignoring the insult. "Though a good portion of it grows on trees or is magically created."

Turtle gave an amused grin at the chair, thinking that she wouldn't go around insulting people when you had to have their butt in your face all the time, but whatever, that's why it was a good thing she wasn't a chair. "Pretty convenient," she said, "although it would be hard as heck to run a business like mine at a place where everything just grew on trees."

"You run your own business?" Dor asked looking surprised. "What kind is that?"

"It's a general store!" Turtle said, lighting up, because there were few things that got her as animated as talking to someone new about the store. "It's called Turtle & Canary and it's very easy to find in town. We sell practically anything you could want, and, if we don't have it, well, then, we'll get it!"

"You manage that and go to school?" Dor said looking amazed since he could barely manage being tutored by centaurs. "Doesn't that take up a lot of time?"

Turtle grinned a little, fairly modestly, because she'd been working a lot on trying to seem a bit flattered when people commented on that. "It's not so bad," she said. "It helps that I have G'Kar co-owning the place with me, and it's nothing compared to what it'll be like if I get voted into radio and student council again, too, and even then, I can handle it. I like being busy."

Dor just kind of boggled in amazement at Turtle. "Do you have a magical talent to be everywhere at once?"

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle shook her head, but her grin remained. "No," she said, "that's Jamie. I'm utterly and completely unmagical. Believe me, I tried. I'm just very tenacious and determined and smart."

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"I find that most girls are like that," Dor said with a nod as he wondered about this Jamie person. "Or at least they're a lot smarter than boys."

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, duh." Turtle definitely smirked at that one, and now officially thought Dor was awesome. "Although you're one up from most boys for being able to realize that."

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I learned that a long time ago," Dor said with an emphatic nod. "Though I'd never admit that to them back home. It would upset the natural order of things."

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"More like upset the natural order of men and their delusions," Turtle muttered with wry satisfaction.

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, but if the women knew I knew they were smarter than me then they wouldn't have as much fun," Dor grinned.

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle arched her eyebrow a little at that statement, and then settled a very careful, calculating sort of look over Dor. She held up a finger, shook it at him slightly. "I'm going to have to keep an eye on you. I'm almost certain that most guys are just as dumb as they act, but now I've got reason to suspect and look out for signs in you, mister."

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] talks2objects.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Dor chuckled. "Oh I don't think you need to do that. I'm pretty harmless."

Re: Be stylish leaders!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Turtle responded back with a little look at Dor. "That's what you'd want me to believe."
