Leadership: Thursday, Period 1, Class 2 (9/11/08)

"In last week's class gave us a snapshot of what we'll be covering over the rest of the semester," Nathan said as he passed around the day's handouts. "Good leaders are not mindless leaders. They are leaders who look at the angles and ask the basic questions. Should they be in charge? Why? How?

"Today we're going to start on the how." Nathan moved back to his desk. "As you can see in your handouts, there are different kinds of leadership styles. Some of you showed the styles that you're more comfortable with last week. In today's class I'd like you to pair up and embody these styles. Pick at least one each, and use those styles on each other. The leadership challenge that you're facing is whether or not there should be coffee available for next week's class. Doesn't matter what position you pick. Just use that leadership style to come to a decision and try to implement it.

"Two announcements before you get started," Nathan added. "First, Meg is going to be the TA for this class so if you need any help in that area talk to her. Second, Student Council Elections are coming up. As you can imagine that's pretty closely tied to what we're working on in class. So if anyone here tries out for Student Council, I will give you extra credit." Nathan grinned. "It's not a requirement that you win, only that you try. I have forms up here if anyone needs them."

"Oh, grades," Ben said, making a face. "Back home you either understood or you didn't, and if you didn't, you were probably in the clinic wishing you'd listened better."

"So your classes are pretty much pass/fail then?" Joan asked.

Ben grinned. "You can say that. More interactive, too."

Joan chuckled. "I'll tell you this much - the classes here are way more interesting than the classes I took back home."
momslilassassin: (Ben: aren't I cute?)

"This is the first time I've ever been to school," Ben admitted.

"Oh, wow," Joan said. "Were you homeschooled?"

"I'm a Jedi--it's kind of the family business," Ben said with a slightly tight smile. "My father runs the Order, my mother's a Jedi Master, and my cousin oversees my training."

"Wow, sounds kind of... intense," Joan said. "What do Jedis do? Are they like police or something?"

"We bring peace and justice to the galaxy," Ben said with the air of someone who'd heard that repeated many, many times. "Diplomats, police, military all rolled into a couple hundred beings with superpowers."

"Sounds like your family is pretty important," Joan remarked.

Ben nodded reluctantly. "My aunt used to run the galaxy," he said. "Now my teacher is part of a group of three who are leading it. And everyone's heard of my father."

Ben liked it here so much better.

"Wow, a whole galaxy? That must be... hard," Joan said. "How come everyone's heard of your father?"

Everyone in Arcadia knew her father, but she suspected that was a rather different situation.

"My dad was a war hero," Ben explained. "In the last, oh, three wars. And he restarted the Jedi from scratch--the government that had been in place when he was a kid had killed off all the other Jedi. So for a while he was the only Jedi in the whole galaxy. That kind of gets around."

"So it's not a genetic thing then?" Joan asked. Unless Ben's father had single-handedly repopulated the galaxy.

"It can run in families--ours is pretty strong in the Force--but I'm his only kid," Ben said with a small smile. "Jedi can be found in a lot of different species, but being Force-sensitive isn't exactly common."

"What does it mean to be Force-sensitive?"
momslilassassin: (Ben: use the Force)

"There's a whole philosophical answer," Ben said, "but basically it means I can do stuff like this." He held out his hand, concentrated, and the pen on his desk lifted up and began spinning.
