The Cafeteria; Lunch [ 09/09 ]

Chad was glad he followed his instincts and went down the cafeteria today to see what they had for lunch instead of making his own because it appeared to be taco day. He loved taco day. It had been, for a long time, a rather love-hate relationship, though, considering how he felt that liking taco day was like fulfilling some sort of blatant and uneducated stereotype, but...

Tacos were tasty. He couldn't help that. So Chad embraced the taco day, filled a plate up, grabbed a bottle of Tabasco, and found a seat.

The big man was intimidating, very much so. Penelope responded with a shy, small, "Hello."

"I like your scarf," Chad offered, and he really did. It was very avant guard casual.

"Thank you," came her soft reply. That was very nice of him to say and she searched his expression, or tried, to see if the comment was genuine.

"I'm Penelope," she offered.

Unfortunately, searching Chad's face for hint of expression sometimes was like searching a rock cliff for a pebble.

"I'm Chad," he responded back. "You're new, right?" He realized that it could be someone he knew, but her eyes didn't look familiar.

"Nice to meet you, Chad," she said, then nodded. "Yes, I am." Peneleope chuckled softly. "And I suspect you're not?"

Wait, no. Maybe not so hard as all that, because there was almost a distinctive smile there.

"Been here practically since the dawn of time," he informed her.

She blinked. "Oh my goodness."

It took Chad a long moment to realize that Penelope's reaction meant that she'd taken him seriously.

"Oh. Um, not literally," he amended. "Only just about two years or so."

"Oh," again she chuckled. "I try not to believe everything."

"Here, it's kind of hit-and-miss," Chad allowed kindly. "So, where are you from? Anywhere I might have heard of?"

"England. 2008. I suppose if you're from this world then you might have heard of it? My Ethics professor said there are different dimensions and I'm not at all sure how to tell if someone is from another place."

[I'm running out any minute! SP okay?]

Chad nodded. "Yeah, we've got England where I'm from, too. Safe to assume they've got Japan and Mexico in your world?"

"Certainly though I've never seen them in person," she commented. "I've never left England, until now."

"And I've never been to England," Chad said. "But I've lived in both Japan and Mexico, and, obviously, the States."

"Almost a world traveler," she joked. Possibly it wasn't funny.

"Since you've been here so long, you must like it?"

"I love it here," Chad said, without even a beat or second thought. "Out of everywhere I've lived, this one's been the best."

She smiled. "That is a wonderful answer."

"Not only that, but it's also true."

"I believe you," she replied. "It also says much about this place. Everbody does seem so friendly and easy going. I was afraid it would be the opposite when I first arrived."

"What brought you here in the first place, Penelope?" Chad asked, picking yet another taco. "If you don't mind me asking."

"I don't mind at all," she said. "My parents decided the social opportunities it would provide would benefit me, considering I've been homeschooled until now." There was much she wouldn't say, but what did was the gist of the explanation.

"And they decided to socailize you all the way here in the States?" Chad asked, head tilting for a moment, but then he shook it. "Well, my abuello wanted the same thing, so I guess it's not that odd."

"They found out it was a school for..." how to say this "...all kinds of kids. You lived with your grandparents?"

"Just the one," Chad held up a finger. "My grandfather. But he died when I was younger, and that's when I went to Japan to go to middle school."

"Oh, I'm very sorry for your loss, however long ago it was," she offered kindly.
