Sam was in her element--or, if one were speaking literally, a number of elements that made up the Earth's atmosphere and the pollution within the atmosphere--as she unpacked scientific equipment. Beakers, bunsen burners, lots of scratch and graph paper, and any other ~~mostly moddable~~ scientific equipment were being laid out, fresh from the packing material and ready to be washed and put away or used for experimentation purposes by students, faculty, or herself.

It occurred to her that she should have asked if anyone (like, for instance, her TAs) wanted to help as a lab assistant for the day, but the radio and anticipation of scientific discovery was company enough.

Ahhh, fire extinguishers. Better to be safe than sorry, she decided, as she set out seven of them of various types.

[ooc: Door is open, all scientists and friends of scientists or people who want to bug Sam are welcome! Will try to make this a weekly thing. Also, this is a *regular* high school science lab--whatever you'd find in your standard high school science lab should be here for experimentation purposes, but it's not for Danger ~~Room~~ Shop or explosives type activities, since there aren't any safeguards for that in this room. Yay for not doing science in dorm rooms?]

Aly raised an eyebrow, wondering if Sam really had heard what she was asking.

"He knew you were his daughter, so don't give me that look," she rolled her eyes. "You might have warned him, so he'd be there for Alanna."

"Maybe I'm too scared of you to tell anyone anything about the future," Aly said with a grin.

"Oh, yeah, because that happens."

"Okay, maybe not," Aly agreed. "But no, I didn't tell him. Too many variables in what could have gone wrong."

Sam nodded her approval, trying not to look disgruntled that no one found her intimidating anymore. She also knew there was a limit on how many and what kind of questions she could ask. "Are you still teaching?"

"If it makes you feel better, Da used to threaten me with your wrath when I asked about the future," Aly offered teasingly. She shook her head. "Not this term. I'm acting as Dean of Students."

That...definitely lead to it being likely that Aly's Da was in fact still Kawalsky, which was reassuring. "It does, thank you," she laughed. "Wow. Were there no heavy combat jobs available?"

She laughed. "Think I got the last one available. It should be interesting anyhow. Hopefully won't lead to insanity. Speaking of which, what brought you back here?"

Sam got very busy unpacking boxes. "I needed a change. Something to do that didn't involve my garage."

Cause that sudden interest wasn't an obvious indication something was wrong at all. "So you decided to rejoin the insanity?"

"Yup," she said, unwrapping a beaker and setting it on the table next to her. "I was getting bored, and trust me when I say that that's not good."

"Blow up anything yet?" she asked. Then realised that should be clarified. "Recently?"

"Not since I got here," she replied, "but there's a part of the garage that I should remind Cameron might not be what you'd call...structurally sound."

She laughed. "You don't think the strange tilting and char marks wouldn't give that away?"

"I should still remind him," she said, wondering what time she should call to make sure she got his voicemail. "It seems only polite."

"How's he doing?" she asked curiously.

"Fine," she shrugged, unpacking another beaker. "Probably enjoying having the house to himself."

Ah, denial, thy name is Carter.

Good to know some things never changed.

"Where are you staying on the island?" Aly asked, dropping the subject. "Or haven't you left the lab yet."

"I have left the lab several times, and I'm living in Xander's old building, in number five, thank you very much. I've even unpacked a box."

"I'm quite impressed you've gotten that far in a week," she teased. "Maybe by Christmas, you'll have a whole room? I'm just upstairs in number ten if you ever need a hand or a break."

"Maybe, but no promises," she grinned, figuring Aly knew about her tendency to get distracted already. "That's good to know. And feel free to drop in--it's not like I have anything for you to interrupt."

"On the contrary, if I break your concentration at the wrong moment, I'm certain we could accidentally have another explosion or two on our hands," she teased.

"That's why there's a lab." Not that it would stop an explosion, but at least it wouldn't be in her own apartment.

Aly raised an eyebrow. Because...really.
