Chemistry, Friday, Period 1

Class started too early in the morning, in a science classroom equipped with lab tables, Bunsen burners, and the faint smell of past explosions gone wrong. Safety goggles and gloves were at each workstation, as were supplies that might look familiar to anyone who'd taken a class with Professor Durden before.

Said professor leaned against his desk, watching and assessing the students as they came in.

"Hey," he greeted the class. "Welcome to Chemistry You Can Use. If you've taken a class with me before, welcome back; if you're new, welcome for the first time; and if you want to call me a stickbug, wait until after class."

"This semester is going to be about the cool parts of chemistry. I'll explain the science, don't worry, but most of it is going to be about actions, reactions, and getting things to happen. For that reason, we're going to go kind of fast, but if you need more explanation, let me know and I'll slow down. We aren't in the danger shop most weeks, and we'll be playing with a lot of things that can get you hurt. I'm not your mom, I'm not going to chase you down and force you to wear goggles and gloves -- though I recommend it -- but don't be stupid. If I tell you to quit doing what you're doing, quit it. You put the rest of the class in danger, you get detention. That's my one big rule." He would come up with smaller ones if he had to.

"This week, and I know this is old hat for some of you, we're making soap. Technically" -- he grinned -- "we are creating the alkali salt of a fatty acid." He went through a thumbnail lecture on the science of that. "If you've done it before, try to do it better, or add scents or herbs this time."

"Miss Yamanaka, please see me after class." His tone on that was pointed. "And I need at least one TA, if anybody's up for it."

"But first, introductions. Name, grade, why you're here, and who you would fight if you could fight anyone, living or dead, fictional people included." He jabbed his finger randomly toward a student. "You first."

"Yamanaka Ino, Sophomore, I'm here because it sounded interesting, and..." she wrinkled her nose a bit, "I'd like to fight myself at the moment."

Look, she even had a different answer this time around. It was shocking.

"Adam Park, senior, I'm here because I've always been intrigued by chemistry," he explained. He'd worked with Billy on so many experiments, it was fitting that he was taking this class. "As for who I would fight? I don't know, maybe Bruce Lee?"

That would be really cool.

That got a grin. "Good to meet you, Adam," Tyler said. "Bruce Lee would be kickass."

"I'm Chris Halliwell, I'm a senior and I'm taking this class because there's a lot of chemistry involved in potion making and I figured it would be good to learn about," he said. "And, um... I wouldn't choose to fight anyone. I have to fight enough people not by choice."

Tyler vaguely remembered the Halliwells, or enough not to be startled by the mention of potions. "I think I remember your world sounds kind of rough," he acknowledged. "Hope you enjoy class, Chris."

"Evey Hammond, senior, I'm here because I've been doing everything I can to verse myself in these sorts of exercises, and as for who I'd fight...probably my mentor. He's dead. And I probably would end up the same way, if I fought him and he wanted to win," she admitted.

Her sketched scenario was grim, and Tyler nodded slowly as he listened to it. "It's good to have you in class again, Evey," Tyler told the girl. "Hopefully if you met him again" -- because, let's face it, given where they lived that might happen -- "It wouldn't be like that."

Shikamaru was asleep when it came time to introduce himself. Someone was going to have to wake him up.

Preferably by throwing something heavy at his head.

Strangely enough, Tyler was not afraid to throw things at students, though he went for a magic marker in favor of anything more dangerous. "You! Nap-boy. You're up."

Shikamaru looked up blearily. He would have shot Tyler an aggravated look, but it wasn't worth the effort.

With a sigh he sat up and answered. "I'm Shikamaru Nara. I'm here because someone back home thought it would be hilarious to make me go to early morning classes." Stupid old lady.

"I want to fight someone who will just leave me alone. It's easier that way."

And with that he tried to fall back asleep. That probably wasn't going to work out for him though.

"Name's Reno, and I'm a senior, yo. I'm here because actions and reactions are what I'm all about. And as for somebody I'd fight?" Oh, the list, it was long. "I'd have to go with Sephiroth, the great SOLDIER 'hero' from my world."

He'd get cut into wee, tiny pieces in about three seconds flat, but hey, if he could get away with it, he'd do it anyhow.

He smiled slightly in approval. "Sounds like you don't think he's such a hero."

"Hi, I'm Eric," he began. "I'm a freshman. I signed up because my mother insisted I take something like a normal class, and this one looked interesting." Well, it did. "I... don't know that I'd choose to fight anyone. Maybe my sister."

"Tony Foster, junior," Tony said. "I'm here because chemistry's useful. And, um, I don't know. I'm not much of a fighter. Maybe Fred Phelps?"

"Hiya! I'm Rikku," she said, bouncing. "I'm taking this class 'cause I know some chemistry-type stuff, and how to mix up different things to get explosions? But I really, really wanna learn more. And ... my answer's kinda boring 'cause it's the same as it was last time. I'd still wanna fight Yunalesca. Except what I really want is to get a fistful of her hair and slam her face into stuff a lot."

And then Yunalesca would pretty much eviscerate her, but it might totally be worth it.
