Class started too early in the morning, in a science classroom equipped with lab tables, Bunsen burners, and the faint smell of past explosions gone wrong. Safety goggles and gloves were at each workstation, as were supplies that might look familiar to anyone who'd taken a class with Professor Durden before.

Said professor leaned against his desk, watching and assessing the students as they came in.

"Hey," he greeted the class. "Welcome to Chemistry You Can Use. If you've taken a class with me before, welcome back; if you're new, welcome for the first time; and if you want to call me a stickbug, wait until after class."

"This semester is going to be about the cool parts of chemistry. I'll explain the science, don't worry, but most of it is going to be about actions, reactions, and getting things to happen. For that reason, we're going to go kind of fast, but if you need more explanation, let me know and I'll slow down. We aren't in the danger shop most weeks, and we'll be playing with a lot of things that can get you hurt. I'm not your mom, I'm not going to chase you down and force you to wear goggles and gloves -- though I recommend it -- but don't be stupid. If I tell you to quit doing what you're doing, quit it. You put the rest of the class in danger, you get detention. That's my one big rule." He would come up with smaller ones if he had to.

"This week, and I know this is old hat for some of you, we're making soap. Technically" -- he grinned -- "we are creating the alkali salt of a fatty acid." He went through a thumbnail lecture on the science of that. "If you've done it before, try to do it better, or add scents or herbs this time."

"Miss Yamanaka, please see me after class." His tone on that was pointed. "And I need at least one TA, if anybody's up for it."

"But first, introductions. Name, grade, why you're here, and who you would fight if you could fight anyone, living or dead, fictional people included." He jabbed his finger randomly toward a student. "You first."

Michael listened, shooting Ino a sidelong glance when she was mentioned.

She caught the glance and raised her eyebrows inquiringly at him.

He flicked a note her way.

What did you do?

What makes you think I did anything?

Look how wounded she was. Really. Look at the way she was smiling impishly.

He told you to stay back and we only had one class?

Maybe he likes me! Ino grinned. I've been in all his classes so far!

Never mind that he hadn't sounded impressed with her. Shhh.

Sure. And he'd sound like he had detention in mind because he likes you.

Detention's not much of a punishment for me. Though he might. Huh. Oh well!

Ino was a picture perfect vision of innocence today.

Really. Completely so.

Adam listened to what was being said, occasionally taking down notes. He wondered what had happened to have Ino stay after class. It'd probably be reported on radio later.

It was way too early for class. Shikamaru wasn't even sure why he'd showed up, but he quickly forgot to wonder as he fell asleep while Tyler was explaining things.

No, it wasn't traumatic at all to find she had a class with a teammate that she hadn't even known was here. No, totally not. Not even a little. Just ignore the wide eyes and white face. Really. Toootally fine.

She should wake him, shouldn't she? It wasn't like she wasn't used to that, but...

She shook her head. Let him sleep and maybe he wouldn't notice that she was on the island. Ino tugged at her sleeves self-consciously.

At the moment Shikaaru seemed more interested in sleeping than in looking for teamates. Maybe if she were super stealthy Ino could avoid him all semester...?

Heeeey. If Reno wasn't allowed to sleep in class, nobody was.

That may or may not have been a spitball aimed for the back of the sleeping guy's head. Just 'cause.

Ino glared at Reno and sank down further in her seat.

Even if it was funny. Sorta.

Reno glanced at Ino curiously, mulled on that reaction for a moment, and then just grinned, winked, and waved hello.

Hey, if he was getting a glare, the least he could do was acknowledge it, right?

She threw a pencil at him and glared more.

Reno allowed the pencil to hit him in the shoulder.

And then he settled back into his seat, stretched, and shrugged. The sleeping dude was still sleeping.

This was the international sign for 'should I try another spitball, Ino?'

There was totally an international sign for that. Shut up.

Riiight. She really believed that one.

She tossed a note at him next. Seriously. Don't wake him up, please?

The thing that may have been a spitball impacted solidly.

There was no reaction from the sleeping guy.

Jack was puzzled. Making soap? But it was available at that Turtle place.

Eric wasn't sure that he'd ever need to make soap. Still, it was definitely a more practical 'experiment' than anything else he'd ever done in chemistry, so he was actually kind of interested.

Tony took notes. He guessed that making soap could be useful, if he ever ended up somewhere with a chemistry lab but lacking a local convenience store.

Rikku was bouncing excitedly in her seat and taking notes. Lots of them.
