OPEN MIC STUDENT COUNCIL QUORUM

"Hello and welcome to the Open Mic Student Council Quorum. This is going to be a cross between a Crossfire event, a debate, and a party. We want you to get to know your Student Council candidates - all of them - better. A lot better. To that purpose, we've invited all of them here tonight. However, as this was not a mandatory event, we don't have a roster yet of who will show up. Feel free to write your questions in, we'll make sure they all get them whether they show tonight or not.

Here's how tonight is going to work:

1) Each Student Council Candidate will be asked 5 questions from the quorum directors (that's us), and they will have 1 minute to answer the question to the best of their ability. We'll be keeping score and awarding points for how accurately each question is answered, as well as style and delivery. At the end of the night, the representative with the most points will win a prize.

2) When the 5 questions have been answered, the floor will be opened to the audience for the Crossfire section - to ask the Candidates anything they want. HOWEVER, the questions must be on topic. Questions phrased with vulgar or offensive language, or questions about personal lifestyle choices or habits will be striken - and the asker will be asked to leave. So phrase your questions carefully. We're here to learn things and have fun.

3) The Candidates may ask each other questions in the Crossfire section. Feel free to go head to head over your issues. Well, verbally, anyway.

4) I mentioned fun, and to that effect, we have Buzzword Bingo going. Each of you was handed a set of Buzzword Bingo Cards and a pencil as you entered. Here's how it works: Each card has the name of a Candidate on it, and many, many buzzwords pulled directly from the debate last night. When you note any Candidate using a buzzword in any of their answers, tick it off on their Bingo Card. The first player to declare a Bingo wins a doorprize. The first player to get Bingos on more than five cards gets the grand prize.

The Prizes:
Single Card Bingo: First 12 people will each win 1lb boxes of chocolates from Wonka's Sweet Shop
Two Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $15 gift certificate to Deb's Diner and Retro Store
Three Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $30 gift certificate to Deb's Diner and Retro Store
Four Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $50 gift certificate to The Emporium
Grand Prize: a $100 gift certificate to Red's Tattoos

The "(Candidate name) Questions" threads will be locked to only the Candidates - please, no ooc comments or non-Candidate posting in them.

The "(Candidate name) Crossfire" section will be open to any IC comments. Please direct your questions to the Candidates in their threads.

Please keep all OOC comments in the "OOC" thread" - we ask because we'll be cutting and pasting from the other threads as the night goes on.

This post will remain the same - a secondary post will be linked for people who want to catch up without scanning a billion comments.

Mr. Blank, as Security Officer, what would you to to protect students from surveilence and spying being done by other students?

Provide additional security measures so that students cannot hack into the video and e-mail systems here at school. I believe that Mr. Jerusalem has already implemented an encryption solution to stop this particular measure, but I think a regular series audits on who is accessing the system would be a good idea.

Who would you suggest make up the auditing body for system access?

"I would probably suggest a volunteer student with technical abilities who would work with a member of the faculty/school administration who shares the same set of qualifications. Obviously the volunteers for this position must be highly scrutinized and have a background check done to ensure that this information is kept private."

"Oh and on a totally separate note... I'd also try and find a way to make sure that tainted food isn't sold to students and make them become something they aren't. 'Cuz that's just wrong."

What is really up with you and that chicken?

"Just a pet. I swear. I'd like to take this opportunity to remind all students and staff that when you ask for something at the cafeteria, remember to ask that it be cooked first."

"Now, Professor if I may ask you a question? I've noticed that the other candidates received more of a... shall we say "serious" question from yourself than I have. Is that because you don't think I take the security of this school seriously?"

Spider grinned at him around his cigarette. "I save the hard questions for the people who need them."

Alanna over hears this and quietly gulps, but lets no other emotion cloud her face.

Marty returns the grin.

"That's a shame. I would have thought that a journalist such as yourself would be interested in more than just what kind of pet a candidate might have."

"I'd actually be exceedingly interested in why you're actually billing yourself as Batshit Crazy," Spider drawled, "if I weren't so certain that you were waiting for the question."

"Actually that's not the question I've been waiting for..."

"The name was actually Number 6's idea, so you'd have to ask him why the name was chosen. I joined the Batshit's because Six and the rest of the group were able to come up with what I felt was a platform that dealt with issues that would address all students needs."

"Oh... and after my detention with Dream I also went a little nuts for a couple of days so I guess that kind of fits."

"Martin," Angelus said, "as you claim to be for the rights and safety of all students, how would you protect a student who finds her or himself at the mercy of vicious gossip, and accusations that lack tangible proof?"

"Unfortunately this is a high school. Even back at Grosse Pointe almost all students were at the mercy of vicious gossip and wrongful accusations. But when gossip and accusations get out of hand, we have to remember that we are innocent until proven guilty and that every student has this right. I don't care if you're human, alien or undead or... well at this school I can't cover all the diverse elements we have here... but each student deserves to have this right and should be mindful of it."

"What if the ones spreading the gossip were faculty?" Angelus asked. "Would you protect the student then?"

"If a faculty member is spreading unsubtantiated gossip regarding a student, I would bring that to the attention of Dean Bristow and let him handle that particular matter. I've met with him earlier this week and find him to be a very fair if not firm person."

Angelus gave a puzzled frown. He indicated the Dean who was sitting in the crowd. "You think Dean Bristow is wishy-washy? And just said so to his face?"

"Mr. Blank, please understand that I am not asking about your love life. What is the one thing, that you as a person, not as a politician, most want? What steps are you taking to achieve that end?"

Marty eyes flicker momentarily to Number 6 and then Dean Bristow.

"Redemption. As for how I go about that..."

Marty shifts uncomfortably.

"That's something I'd rather not talk about in public. For personal reasons."

Beka gives him an appraising look, one that is not unkind, but misses nothing. Finally, she nods.

"That's why you want this position?"

"Partially. Trying to ensure the safety of all students has become part of that... and something I'll try to do anyway even if I'm not elected."

Beka nods, smiling a bit grimly. To a practiced eye it'll be clear that she feels the same. "Thank you. I have no further questions."
