Roving the Galaxy - Friday, Period 4 (Week 7)

As instructed last week, today's field trip was beginning with everyone meeting in the park outside of the big, blue police box. The Doctor was waiting there for them. Anyone who came more than five minutes late would miss out and find the TARDIS gone.

The Doctor gave it five minutes after the workshop start time, then unlocked the TARDIS and pushed the door open. Instead of a small, cramped space as the outside of the box suggested, a large room (http://i36.tinypic.com/24bnuxy.png) was on the other side of the door.

"Everyone in," the Doctor said, "and don't touch anything!"

Spoil sport.

Sokka assumed that by "don't touch anything", the Doctor meant "don't push buttons, turn knobs, flip switches, etc."

If, in fact, he meant "do not attempt to bring your hands into physical contact with the big control panel thingy in the center," Sokka was failing miserably at that.

"Ooooooooh...."

"Do you have to? Really? I mean yes, shiny, very 'ooh' and 'ahh' but the touching, really?"

"I didn't!" Sokka protested, with his fingers a hair's breadth away from a shiny lever. "I'm just looking!"

It was close enough for the Doctor, who was in possessive, slightly grouchy Time Lord mode. "Looking with eyes, Sokka, not hands. Eyes. Can you point to your eyes?" Okay, condescending, grouchy Time Lord mode.

"Okay, okay, okay, I won't touch anything!" Sokka grumped, backing away from the panel. "It's not MY fault your spaceship's all kinds of awesome."

It was funny how he could go from grouchy Time Lord to boy who was proud of his shiny toy in an instant. He broke into a grin. "It is, isn't it?"

Sokka grinned back. "It's AWESOME!!!"

Cimorene wasn't touching, but she was studying everything from a very close distance.

Hoshi was about to say that, from the outside appearance, it didn't look like the entire class could fit. It was good that she kept her mouth shut, because once she got in, she could that appearances could be deceiving.

Helen looked with her eyes, not with her hands.

Peter looked around. He didn't touch, but he was tempted.

Gwynn was curious about everything, but she did not touch.

Karal stared, not that anyone would be able to tell, seeing as he wasn't seeing through his eyes, and backed very far away from the middle of the...thing.

Altra sniffed at it once, then wrapped his tail around his feet and exuded an unimpressed air.

"I mean it," the Doctor said, reconsidering whether having a bunch of high school students in the TARDIS was such a good idea. "Don't touch anything. Not even a little bit. Not even if it flashes at you with an alert that says 'push me!' okay? Just don't." He started to wind a crank, then pulled a lever, then did some other things that made him look terribly clever (or like he was showing off, which he was). The TARDIS lurched and the centrepiece started to pump up and down. "Off we go!" He wandered around the centre console, occasionally flipping a switch or adjusting something. Mostly, he was making sure no one was touching anything.

Sokka looked around with a huge grin on his face as they started lurching, but then frowned. "You know what this thing needs? Windows."

The Doctor hit a button with much more force than was necessary, then turned a screen towards Sokka. "There ya go. Better than windows. Won't crack under the force of moving as fast as we are or the pressure of the time vortex." Really, it was just a bunch of pretty lights.

Sokka stared at the screen. "That's what's outside right now?"

The Doctor thought about suggesting that Sokka go and have a look in a 'why don't you go and jump in the time vortex' schoolyard kind of way, but then realised he would probably take it seriously, so he refrained. "Yep," he finally went with a moment later. "Lots of pretty swirling colours and gravimetric forces." And plenty of complicated stuff too, but it wasn't worth going into.

"So, when you say 'Time Vortex'," Sokka asked, curious now, "is that just your word for hyperspace, or are we actually traveling through time?"

The Doctor looked confused for a moment. "Why would anyone call something a Time Vortex if it wasn't to do with time?" He actually did like Sokka, but he hadn't had a Mickey type to pick on for a long time, so he was taking the opportunity while he could.

Sokka shrugged. "I dunno," he said. "All those sci-fi shows try to claim that space and time are really just the same thing, so maybe it would be something like that? Look, we haven't discovered electricity yet in my universe, so don't ask me!"

"You might want to work on that," the Doctor suggested. "Not that you can't live without electricity, it's just, well, it's so convenient."

Karal was praying. It seemed the thing to do, and he was relieved when Altra came and sat at his feet. On his feet, in fact. "This does not seem like the best idea," he whispered.

Altra, whiskers twitching in amusement, watched the Doctor. :I don't know, I think I like his style.:

Once the TARDIS settled, the Doctor bounded down the ramp to the door and stood in front of it. "A couple of ground rules. No leaving the marketplace outside this door. There are three ways in and out and you're not to use any of them. There are rules to the marketplace dictated by the governing authority here. They're quite simple: no violence, no theft. Other than that, have fun. If you need me, I won't be far from the TARDIS. You have two hours, then come back here and we'll be back in Fandom by the end of the workshop. This is all very real, as are the consequences." He looked in particular at a few students. "So behave. The TARDIS will handle the language problem and here," he tapped up a box beside the door with a pouch for each student with his foot, "is your currency. Try not to blow it all on one purchase." He pushed the door open to reveal a bustling, vibrant market square.

The walls around the market were high and there were stalls and shops and food places of all sorts. There were humans and aliens of all sorts, mingling peacefully and bartering for goods and services. The Doctor stepped outside and breathed in the air. "Welcome to Jahoo!"

Sokka stared at the marketplace, grinning like an idiot. He was 99% sure they weren't in the Danger Shop, and... Wow.

He took the currency and counted it, trying to get an idea of how much was there. Item one on the agenda: sampling the local cuisine. Item two: acquiring some REALLY COOL alien tech, possibly of a weapon-type nature, if he could afford it.

Cimorene was not the type to gawk, but if she was? There would be gawking. Instead, she was studying everything. Intensely.

Hoshi was somewhat disappointed to find that she could understand what people were saying, thanks to the TARDIS. It didn't let her hear the language itself. But there was still plenty to look at, and she quickly got over her disappointment.

Helen looked around with fascination.

Okay, this was cool. Peter resolved to look around and try to get some gifts for his friends.

Gwynn was entranced by everything she was seeing. She was quite enjoying herself as she carefully explored.

At the end of the two hours, the Doctor made sure everyone was back and ushered them into the TARDIS. A few fancy moves at the controls later and they were back in Fandom before the end of their allotted workshop time.

Before, after or during the trip. Just specify when.

Sleep sucks, but it's gotta be done. Feel free to NPC for yourself or others or I'll be on tonight to do just that if you can wait that long! If you feel the need to get into trouble and need the Doctor to come to the rescue (he's good at that!) just ping me here and I'll be there to ping in ASAP.

Sadly, Sam is still stuck out of town, and won't be in class. :/
