Underwater Basketweaving as a Metaphor for Organising Your Life -- Class 7, Period 2 [Tuesday]

“Good morning class,” Juli said mildly, as she and Lulu called the class to order. “Today’s shall be a busy one, I’m afraid.”

They were at the beach, and though Juli had not come in her swimsuit, the children had still been ordered to, and Lulu was wearing hers. There were basket-making rushes, reeds, and frames laid out neatly on tables just off to one side. She spared them a glance before beginning to talk again.

“Today you will each be attempting, under our supervision," Lulu said, "to, yes, weave a basket underwater. You will need all of the skills that have been covered so far in this workshop. Yes, this exercise is rated rather more on your willingness to try, and determination in attempting to combine all of the skills together, than how well you actually manage to weave a basket underwater, but we'd like you to try anyway.”

Juli smiled. “After your attempts you are all required to answer a question. Multi-tasking is an incredibly vital skill in the world that you live in today—each and everyone of you have spent the last weeks learning various skills and how to use them at the same time. How, then, would you say you can apply the act of combining skills and doing more than one thing at once outside of this class, and further on into your life?”

“First though, basket weaving.”

As Juli and Lulu's students finished up their class discussion, Lulu smiled at them. "And now," she said, "for any of you who don't have to run off to another workshop, we invite you to stay around and join us for... a bit of a beach party."

[Wait for the OCD is up!]

In what's pretty much a reversal of my usual availability, I'm actually working a day shift tomorrow -- I'm working "10AM-'til-sometime-that-is-earlier-than-close-but-is-otherwise-as-yet-undertermined". Which means probably 8PM -- which means I'll be around a little bit earlier, and actually hit some of that prime RPing time. ;)

"Yup!" Sokka answered. "All the time. You always need to be doing lots of things at once."

Sokka grabbed a frame and reeds and dove into the water.

Then he surfaced and spent some time collecting all the reeds he'd lost his grip on, after which he submerged again much more carefully.

He worked away at the basket, trying to make a nice pattern out of different sizes and colors of reeds, and surfaced for a breath every 5 minutes or so.

Chris was a little hesitant about this, but he gathered supplies and dove in. He managed to hold his breath for about four minutes at a time while he worked. The basket weaving was... moderately successful.

Bender had no problems with the staying-underwater part, sitting submerged on the ocean floor. The weaving was more complicated - the waterlogged reeds not behaving quite like his earlier attempts.

His basket was mostly functional, but definitely not decorative.

Summer dove into the water and began working on the weaving. When she was finished, it sort of resembled a basket. Maybe.

Turtle usually didn't mind this part of having a boyfriend turning into something. It was just what her boyfriend had turned into that made it hard as she ducked in to talk to one of the basketweaving teachers about Jeff's current state.

"Um, hello."

"Jeff won't be here today, Miss Mizrahi," Turtle answered, keeping it nice and simple and to the point. "He's currently a rock."

Turtle shifted a little uncomfortably. "Well, I wouldn't think so, especially considering that rocks aren't animals, Miss Mizrahi. I think...I think it just has a lot more to do with the individual involved that determines what sort of thing they turn into..."

She closed her eyes and prayed that she didn't inquire as to what about Jeff's nature would lead to that particular transformation.

Turtle breathed a sigh of relief, and the fact that Miss Mizrahi didn't ask caused her to smile brightly as she said, "Oh, you're welcome! It's only fair; he did the same for my classes last week when I was a turtle."

Turtle sighed a little. "I guess; this way we can take care of each other, but it's still lame that, just as soon as I stop being a turtle, he turns into a rock."

Harry grabbed some supplies and jumped in.

Holding his breath wasn't much of a problem, though he wasn't as good at it as some of his classmates were. The weaving was slightly more a problem, but he'd set out to make something simple and that was what he was ending up with. Something simple and honestly kind of ugly, but it was at least something like a basket.

Lion-o who may not get use out of this icon again for a while grabbed some basket-making stuff and went underwater.

It took him a little while because he couldn't hold his breath very long, but eventually he emerged with something that sort of resembled a basket.
