Tyler didn't seem especially inclined to chit-chat as he started class today, but that wasn't so far from his norm.

"All right," he said, once the students were all seated. "So you have a house -- decorated to your specifications -- and a job, and what you need is something to do in your down time. Drinking yourself into a coma is always a popular choice, and so is watching TV until your brain turns to goop. But on the off chance you need something more active to do and don't already spend all your time on the Internet arguing about plot holes in the new Z-Cases Movie, hobbies are good things. And knitting is a really popular hobby."

He held up a skein of gray yarn with knitting needles through it. "I learned to do this here. Eleven years ago, I could make a scarf. Right now, I can make a slightly better scarf. Here's how." He explained and demonstrated knitting, looking oddly proud of himself as he finished a few rows.

"The other popular thing to knit in Fandom, and I do not wanna know why, is dildo cozies." He held up one that looked like a very long, very skinny sock made from neon purple yarn. "There are patterns for those on your tables, should you feel so inspired."

"And that is it from me for the day, go ahead and knit. I'll be around."

Meg was there and knitting something. She wasn't quite sure what it was going to turn out to be yet.

Once the students were started on their projects, Tyler went over to Meg's seat. "Hey, what are you working on?"

"Uh, I'm not quite sure yet," Meg admitted. She lifted up her work. "It might turn out to be a scarf."

"It could be a scarf," Tyler agreed thoughtfully. "Pretty much, if it's longer than it is wide, it's a scarf to me."

"That's what I figure too," Meg said, smiling. "I'm getting a jump start on the winter, I guess."

"It's closer than we think," Tyler said. "Anyhow, do you feel up to running class next week? I have some family stuff to take care of, not sure I'll be back in time."

Which was his way of saying I have to go finalize my divorce and will probably spend the next several days getting beaten senseless, but that might have frightened Meg a skosh.

"Oh sure I can," Meg said, nodding. That was part of her TA'ly duties after all. "I can totally handle it."

"Fantastic," Tyler said, relieved. "It's probably the last class of the summer for most of them, so I was just going to put in a movie anyhow, but if you have a better idea go with it."

His eyes took in the students. "Let them know I said they rocked."

"Oh I don't think I can deprive these guys of movie day," Meg said, grinning. "And I'll definitely be sure to tell them they rocked."

"Perfect on both points," Tyler nodded. "And take some credit for yourself, too."

"So I guess you're off to college after that, huh?"

"Yeah, I'm off to Stanford," she said, not looking entirely pleased about the whole thing. "I kinda don't want to leave."

"This place does that," he said simply. "Maybe you'll be like me and come back here sometime when you're old. Shake a cane at all the whippersnappers."

"But good luck out in California. You'll do fine."

Cassandra glanced over, then waved.

Meg smiled and waved back at her roomie.

Cassandra's smile widened and she moved closer, "What are you making?"

"A scarf, I think," Meg said, looking down at her knitting. "Scarves are pretty much the only thing I can make with any confidence."
