The Right Tools, Tuesday Period Four

"We were going to talk blunt objects today," Kerrigan said to the class, looking distinctly annoyed. For one, all the sharp edges of her wings were covered in bubblewrap, and so was most of her hair.

She was not amused. "However, since the island seems to have this need to intervene with my plans, we're just going to take said blunt objects and divest them of bubblewrap."

She pointed at a series of staffs in the corner. They were all wrapped in the stuff. As were the tables, the board, and at least part of the floor. "Keep working until the bubbles go away," she muttered, "I don't care how you do it. Just get it out of my sight. See it as a practical exam."

"Professor Kerrigan?" Helen said cautiously. "Would you like - I mean, I think I could help get some of the bubblewrap off of your wings. With my arm, I mean. It would be safer because when my arm's a knife I can still feel everything so there wouldn't be a risk of cutting you."

Helen very carefully began the process of cutting through the bubblewrap, concentrating very hard to make sure she felt right out to the very tip of the knife her arm had become and blunting it whenever she got too close to the skin. It didn't take too long before she had the first wing free.

"Perhaps my arm is the Right Tool today," she said with a small smile.

Helen blushed a little and set to work on the other wing. This one went a little quicker since she knew better how the wings moved. "There," she said finally. "I think you're set. Unless the island decides to rewrap you. But if it does I'd be glad to help again."

"You're welcome," Helen said, blushing again. "I'm glad I could help."

She sighed. "I miss the bugs and the spiders. I wish we'd stayed there longer."

"They like me," Helen said simply. "And they listen to me and do what I say. So do snakes and sharks and rats and stuff. And really, if you take the time to look at them, some of them are quite beautiful. But most people just yell or run away and never stop to see what they're really like."

"Rats are my very favorite," Helen admitted shyly. "There were always some around in the House of Uquar and I made some my pets. Here, well... it's different."

"There aren't as many - none in the dorms - and I don't think the outside rats would be happy indoors," she explained.
