The Right Tools, Tuesday Period Four

"We were going to talk blunt objects today," Kerrigan said to the class, looking distinctly annoyed. For one, all the sharp edges of her wings were covered in bubblewrap, and so was most of her hair.

She was not amused. "However, since the island seems to have this need to intervene with my plans, we're just going to take said blunt objects and divest them of bubblewrap."

She pointed at a series of staffs in the corner. They were all wrapped in the stuff. As were the tables, the board, and at least part of the floor. "Keep working until the bubbles go away," she muttered, "I don't care how you do it. Just get it out of my sight. See it as a practical exam."

"I wish that I could," he replied, and sighed. "She is why I'm here. This is Evey, who is temporarily a deer." Evey flicked her ears in irritation and stamped one front hoof. "Which she is not at all pleased about, but that is why she wasn't in class today."

"I can see that," Kerrigan said, and Karal's presence made her make some subconscious effort not to let the sarcasm drip too strongly off her words. "When did this happen?" And when did Karal come back?

"Last week." Karal rested a hand on Evey's head and she sighed, looking slightly less annoyed. "I don't know how long it will last, but there seems to be a rash of it at the moment. If there's an assignment or homework you want Evey to do I can work with her on it."

He smiled a little, chin tilted up, eyes unfocussed, his view of Kerrigan through Altra's eyes a rather strange one. It had taken him a moment to realise just how strange that view had gotten. "We're starting to understand each other quite well."

"As far as excuses for missing class go, 'I turned into a deer' is a pretty sound one," she said, her head snaking from side to side in an attempt to catch Karal's eyes. She knew that look; she'd seen that one before. "And what happened to you?"

He understood what she was asking. "I lost my sight," he replied quietly, smiling when Evey nuzzled his hand. "But I can see through Altra's eyes," The Firecat inclined his head, "so it is not so bad."

"I thought I picked up on something a little off in that regard," Kerrigan replied, her eyes flicking to Altra to take in the Firecat. Big, big cat. "Am I going to get anything out of you if I ask you what happened?" she asked Karal.

He'd been one of the good ones, and in her belly uncoiled a different kind of anger.

Evey angled an ear in warning at Kerrigan and Karal rested his hand on her head again. "It's all right," he told her. "I don't mind telling people." She huffed once, then leaned against his leg.

"You know why I returned to my world, to try and help stop the Storms. We found a way," he explained to Kerrigan. "But to stop them, their power had to be channelled away, into a great void and I, I was the only Channel they had." He was quiet for a moment. "It worked, and the Storms have been stopped forever. I would have paid far more for that than just my sight."

Something in her face twitch. It might have been a smile, but it could have just as well have been a grimace. "Yeah, we all pay in the end, don't we?" Kerrigan replied. She wasn't bitter. Really, she wasn't.

"There is always a price to be paid." He bit his lip, then said, very carefully, "I'm not the only one who has changed since we last spoke." It was a very subtle, very gentle offer to listen, should she need it, as Karal who was a student gave way in favour of the priest.

"Let's just say there's the occasional price a person might wind up regret paying," she said flatly. "I'm hoping yours was better." And she was more than willing to hunt down who was responsible and give them a piece of her knife either way.

"It was," he said softly, then gave himself a mental shake. "Well, there is one good thing that has come of Evey being a deer, at least."

Evey slanted a look at him.

And Kerrigan, for her part, blinked at him before raising an eyebrow at the deer. "...Which would be?" She was a deer, for god's sake.

Evey was practically echoing Kerrigan's thought with every fire of her cervidian body, and was staring up at Karal.

Karal suspected he'd be apologising for this very shortly, but, "It did give me a chance to speak with you again."

Her eyes shot up towards her hair. "You'll probably have to explain that one to your girlfriend later," Kerrigan joked, "But it's a nice sentiment. Although I do have office hours."

"I suspect you're right." Evey was still eyeing him, and he shrugged a little, making her sigh. "Would you mind if I stopped by during your office hours?"

"You'd probably the least aggravating person in there," she told him. Which was the complete, utterly honest truth.

"I will take that as a yes," he decided. "And take my leave of you before I say anything else I'll have to make amends for."

Evey was way ahead of him, giving Kerrigan a polite nod before turning for the door.
