Roving the Galaxy - Friday, Period 4 (Week 5)

When the students arrived, they were separated into groups of 3 (and one group of four if raccoon-Kaylee was there) and put into your standard prison cell with bars, a barred window, brick walls, a sink, a toilet and bunk beds. The Doctor locked each cell door and pocketed the key. "Today's topic is 'so you're a prisoner'. It's what usually happens when you fail to keep a low profile, aren't fast enough figuring out that something isn't right and failed at polite conversation. So if you mess up everything this workshop has taught you so far, you'll at least have a chance to try to get out. Not all jails will be this simple, but it's a fairly common set-up, so let's go with it. Go on then. Try to escape. The bars won't react to weapons or temperature changes and can't be ripped out, so you'll have to be creative. I'll be over here if you need me." He took a seat at the end of the corridor.

Three to a cell.

Gwynn was poking at things

Hoshi was sitting in the corner of the cell, sulking. "Any ideas?" she asked. "'Cause I think I'm a little out of my element on this one, unless I can talk to the bars and convince them to let us out."

Gwynn looked up from where she was trying to find a weakness in the bars. "I don't have any ideas on how to get out of this one," she said apologetically. "The bars look to be quite strong."

"You don't happen to have a nail file, do you?" asked Hoshi, checking her own pockets. All she could come up with was a data PADD and a communications device.

Gwynn started checking her pockets. "I'm not sure what a nail file even is, but I have a whetstone..." She couldn't carry her sword, but she carried her accessories.

"That could work," said Hoshi. "If we could file through the bars just enough to weaken them, we could knock them out of place and slip through the opening, as long as the guards don't notice."

"We would need to find a way to distract the guards."

"Yeah, that could be a problem," said Hoshi, thinking. "I think I might have something for that, though."

She pulled out her communications device and started tapping keys. "I think I can program this to start beeping after a few minutes and toss it into another cell. Then we could sneak out while the guards are trying to find the source of the beeping."

Gwynn's face lit up. "That's an awesome idea."

"Isn't it?" said Hoshi. "Because there's another way I can think of to distract the guards, but I don't think I'm the right person for that."

"It really is." Gwynn tilted her head. "What other way?"

"Flirting with the guards," said Hoshi, looking a little wary. "But I seem to have enough trouble flirting with normal guys."

Gwynn gave her a faint smile. "I have never been able to flirt, either."

Her just talking her less than tactful way had gotten her and Conner together.

"I just don't understand them sometimes," said Hoshi.

"Boys do seem to be a strange sort of creature," she admitted.

"And I have friends who are boys, but I don't seem to be able to get past that point," said Hoshi with a sigh.

Gwynn nodded. "I have many friends that are boys and I can talk to them, but beyond that?" She shrugged. "Luckily Conner wanted to be with me because I don't know how to flirt. I just told him that I wanted to kiss him."

"Oh, that is so sweet!" said Hoshi. "Maybe I should just be more direct. I tried asking a boy to the Valentine's dance and he said yes, but it turned out that someone else liked him and she got mad at me. I kept my distance after that."

"If she liked him but didn't let anyone know, why should she be mad at you?"

Gwynn was indignant on Hoshi's behalf.

"I guess she felt that I went behind her back," said Hoshi with a shrug. "Honestly, though, if I had to choose between them, I would rather have been her friend instead of dating him."

Gwynn smiled. "I have learned that friends can be much more important than anything. Especially here. I just have a hard time making friends sometimes because I am not the best in social situations."

"I've had my own struggles with that, but I seem to have done well in making new friends," said Hoshi.

Gwynn smiled. "That is a very good thing, then."
