Basic Cryptozoology - Wednesday - First Period - 7/30

Lucky for her class, Abigail Irene Garrett was in fact in a lovely mood for the day. She had a date set for Friday, there was a play on the island which sounded very interesting, and her patchwork terrier Mike was up on her desk, insisting on getting a scritch from under her hand.

"Today, as I told you last week, I'll be asking each of you to present a few minutes on the subject of a creature, perhaps a cryptid, from your own world. I'll start things off for all of us...

She shook her head. "A-All of the t-three c-can fight," Hinata said quietly. "T-They're n-not just like t-their mundane counterparts, so d-differences will h-happen. A-And there a-are m-mammalian S-Summons. L-Like m-monkeys and d-dogs."

"N-No," she said, as close to serene as she ever got, "F-Father says that t-they only m-make the shinobi w-weaker because we a-are not relying o-on our o-own strength."

"A view point which I can certainly understand to a point. My personal dissatisfaction with demonology is in the reliance on another beings energy, though the summons you mention seem more benign or neutral in nature.

"But I am sure that teamwork has it's advantages. I've found it so, on occasion."

She bobbed her head. "T-Teamwork is i-important, b-but that is w-why we have t-teams. F-Father says w-we shouldn't u-use that as an e-excuse to n-need more h-help."

"But team members could be injured, incapacitated, or otherwise detained. What would make a team member more acceptable than a summon in his eyes?"

"I-If... t-that...," Hinata studied her hands. "F-Father would s-say that if a t-team was s-so weak t-that they n-needed o-outside a-assistance t-then they p-probably d-deserve what they g-get, f-for the most p-part."

Her mouth was set in something of a line, but she couldn't help her father's opinion.

"And what you think, Hinata?" she asked gently.

"T-That any a-advantage is a g-good one," she said, flushing with embarrassment at disagreeing so openly with what her father would say. It did not matter that he was not there to hear it. "A-And it i-is a p-poor n-ninja that s-sneers at a v-valuable t-tool."

She smiled warmly at that.

"Then it's my opinion that you are wiser than your father in that respect," she said with a nod of her head.

"A fool does not rest his strength on another, but a greater fool assumes he will never have to. One can never know what you might come up against and to ignore a tool on simple principle is the worst kind of pigheadedness."

She leaned down a little.

"The most important advantage is the kind which lets you succeed or, baring that, come home at the end of the day to try again."

She bowed her head, flushing miserably, and severely uncomfortable. "K-Kurenai-sensei s-says that t-too..."

"Your father's theories have weight and are very wise to a point, but you can never be the strongest. Or the best. There is always a hole in the armor, or something which will come from out of nowhere, no matter how good you are.

"And, to be perfectly honest, everyone sleeps."

Hinata was almost completely expressionless by now, flush traded for pale, and staring at her desk.

"Y-Yes, DCI Garrett-sensei."

She watched Hinata for a moment before simply nodding.

Perhaps her view was a bit harsh, but it'd let her survive more years than most of these children had been alive in her business. Be the best you could be, but never mistake that for the best there was.
