The Right Tools, Tuesday Period Four

“Today, we are concerned with handguns.” Kerrigan had done away with the coat; the cargo pants and tank top she’d enjoyed wearing when she was human were doing something of a job of covering her up, still, but the wings protruded proudly behind her. She was just going to ignore it. “I’m sure you’re all jumping holes in the air about it.”

She held up the 9mm with an almost bored sense of professionalism. It was simulated, of course—she preferred the Danger Shoppe because it meant lower risks, and this was no different. “This is a pistol,” she said, “It comes in a couple of different varieties. Single-shot-- does exactly as it says. Multi-barrel’s in possession of several barrels instead of just the one you’re probably used to from the movies. This one is a semi-automatic, which means it uses one shot to load the next bullet.” She turned the gun a little in the air so the class could better see the mechanism. She put it down, reaching for a second weapon. “Finally, you have revolvers. You might know these from westerns—you fill up the cylinder with bullets, and the cylinder rotates either with the use of the trigger, or…” she pulled the hammer, “the hammer.”

She tossed that one back onto the table, too. “I’m not going to go into further details on the technicalities,” she said, “That’s not why we’re here. Grab a gun class if it is. What we’re concerned with here is when you use it. First strike for the use of a handgun? It’s easy to conceal. Pockets, thighs, hell, arms if you wear a big enough jacket, the smaller they are, the easier they are to hide. Just be careful your bad guys aren’t using metal detectors, because they bleep like hell.”

Not that she had any experience in the area. “Keep in mind that a gun is built for one purpose only, which is to damage or kill your opponent. It doesn’t come with a lot of finesse unless you’re a pro, but it’s a good spot of self-defense in a pinch. It’s also helpful due to the longer range—you’re going to want one of these on you if you’re heading into hostile territory. It’s kind of in the middle—not as precise as your average sniper rifle, but it covers a fat lot less than a machine gun.”

She nodded at the table, which had a bunch of identical 9mm semi-automatics set on it. Again, simulated. “None of these are loaded,” she told the class, “so don’t even think about it. This is just your chance to get a feel for it: where can you hide it best? How do the parts fit together? How does it lie in your hand? Know the basics of your weapon before you drag one into battle, and for god’s sake, don’t put your finger on that trigger unless you’re about to fire it. That’s a lot of power in one chunk of metal; don’t ever treat it lightly.”

"Right. Tomorrow. I'll make sure I write it tonight," said Hoshi.
