Escape Artistry: Week 3, Period 3 (Thurs. 07/24)

The Danger Shop was set up like the Salle. The main difference was the giant Satedan in the center of the room, going through a complicated practice routine with a bokutō blade. When they arrived, he stopped and approached the group with a feral smile, spinning the wooden sword in his hand as he spoke.

"Today we're sword fighting. If it's your first fight, there's a handout for you. First thing to know about sword fighting: keep your eyes straight ahead. Focus on the enemy. Never ever look away from your enemy. It shows weakness. Are you weak?" He stared down a couple students in particular as he paced the floor in front of them all. "Second thing: You’ve gotta anticipate the enemy's next move. Always be ready. I'll give you a minute to look at the papers." Ronon stepped away, preparing to instruct them on how this was going to go down.

Damn. His strategy failed, Rodney slowly made his way forward.

"Ever held a sword?" Ronon asked, already knowing the answer.

"There's not much call for swords in the sciences." Rodney might be nervous, but he still couldn't hold back the sarcasm.

"This should be fun then," Ronon said, lowering his bokutō and moving to stand next to Rodney. "Hold your sword with both hands, like this." He showed him what he meant. "Keep the blade up and keep your eyes on me."

Rodney copied the grip as best he could and tensely held up the practice blade. "Right, eyes on you."

Ronon could only hope this McKay would have better focusing skills. He resumed his position across from Rodney with a nod. "Looking away from the enemy shows your weakness. Are you weak, McKay?"

"In what sense?" Rodney hedged. "I mean, I'm certainly not weak-minded."

Ronon sighed, "Weak of body and spirit."

"Can we just get this over with?" Rodney pleaded.

"Fine, you take offense, let's see what you can do." Ronon wasn't sure it would be much, but he was ready and waiting.

"Right," Rodney gulped. He help the sword like he'd been shown and then lifted it high, leaving himself completely open, to strike down at Dex.

It was too easy, Ronon stepped forward and swung his blade to tap Rodney's side while reaching his free hand up to try to catch the boy's hands.

"Ow," Rodney grunted. "That's not fair," he complained as he tried to pull his hands free. He wasn't sure what wasn't fair about it, but it seemed like the thing to say.

Ronon released Rodney's hands in a way that could knock him to the ground if he wasn't steady. "Life's not fair," Ronon reminded him. He'd heard that one enough.

Rodney was not steady and he hit the ground pretty hard. "I... you... Is there a point to this?" He bit out through clenched teeth.

"Not if I'm lucky," Ronon told him, offering a hand up.

"Huh?" Rodney took the hand to get up off the floor. He was sure he'd never understand this guy.
