Escape Artistry: Week 3, Period 3 (Thurs. 07/24)

The Danger Shop was set up like the Salle. The main difference was the giant Satedan in the center of the room, going through a complicated practice routine with a bokutō blade. When they arrived, he stopped and approached the group with a feral smile, spinning the wooden sword in his hand as he spoke.

"Today we're sword fighting. If it's your first fight, there's a handout for you. First thing to know about sword fighting: keep your eyes straight ahead. Focus on the enemy. Never ever look away from your enemy. It shows weakness. Are you weak?" He stared down a couple students in particular as he paced the floor in front of them all. "Second thing: You’ve gotta anticipate the enemy's next move. Always be ready. I'll give you a minute to look at the papers." Ronon stepped away, preparing to instruct them on how this was going to go down.

"Must be it." Keeping his eyes focused intently on her, Ronon swiped his bokutō up and toward hers.

Helen was watching him equally intently and wondering just how badly she was going to end up hurt at the end of this thing.

She saw his bokuto move and stepped up and into the blow, managing to get hers in position to block it, mostly. The hard contact jarred her all the way to her bones and her eyes went wide with the shock. She masked her reaction as quickly as she could and shifted to strike at him from the left.

"Step into it," Ronon advised, showing her what he meant as he stepped forward into her blow, attempting to block it and push her sword away.

She moved with the push, trying not to let it get her off balance, then stepped in to attack again.

"Better," Ronon grunted, putting a little more power behind his next blow, aiming it close to her hilt.

She stepped in again, trying to push his sword away rather than just block it. Still, she had to bite down hard on a yelp of pain at the impact of his sword on hers. The force of it knocked her back a few steps, but she immediately started in again.

Ronon's grin was feral as he twirled his sword around his wrist before moving to meet her blade from the left.

Helen took a deep breath as she stepped in, blocked and took a swing at him from the left. She couldn't keep this up for much longer, she already knew she was more off balance than she should be.

Noticing her lack of balance, Ronon sped up his attack, meeting her blade and pushing against it with both his hands.

And she went over, hitting the mat hard but quickly scrambling backward and pulling herself up to her feet even as her sword went skittering off to the side.

She put her hands up in surrender, breathing hard.

"Next time, try to keep hold of the sword," Ronon offered helpfully.

She nodded, blushing, though she supposed for her first time ever holding a sword she hadn't done horrendously badly.
