Enjoying Those Teenage Years [period 5, Tuesday]

When everyone filed into the Danger Shop today, they'd find that it looked like a small casino.

"Hello, children!" Robin said, unusually gleeful. "Today, we're playing some games. Now, I'm sure some of you have actually played these games before -- that's not in question. The question is whether you're any good at them. Because hey, guess what? Gambling isn't about luck, or the odds, or anything like that -- I mean, to a degree, it is, but what it's about, more than anything? Is knowing how the game works and being able to think on your feet."

She passed out a few handouts. "These'll explain that scary math involved with any game of chance like this, so look them over. You're all going to be playing against the house, not each other, though I do encourage you guys to play outside of class and try to clean each other out. Don't tell anyone I said that. And on that note, fake casino, fake NPC dealers, and that means -- yes, you guessed it: fake money. For today, I want you guys to take a look at craps, blackjack, and Caribbean stud, which is just like five card stud but you play against the dealer. If you want to play something else, by all means, but if I catch any of you guys by the slot machines, I'm branding you losers. That's Grandma's game."

[sorry on the semi-lame class, guys! My power went out and I only just got it back, eep.]

Rikku -- who had luckily sobered up some from her morning's rum shower -- was doing math calculations in her head. Ooooooh, this was nifty.

Dōjima was trying to read the handouts, but quickly got bored with the bits about the maths. She'd just stick with her old standby - never underestimate the Power of Cleavage and being cute.

Dice were easier to fix without getting caught than cards. He headed for the craps table.

Okay, so -- she understood craps, and she knew it was a bad bet, but she couldn't stop herself from laying money on hard eight, hard six, and all those other pretty ones on the side. Which was why she went broke pretty quickly.

John was good at working the numbers. Hopefully no one would notice he was counting cards or slightly tipsy from his time out on the deck.

Oooooooh. She got better at blackjack when she remembered useful things like taking the dealer's visible card into account. If you have 16 and he has a 4 showing, way better to stand than if he's got an 8 showing, right?

So she managed to peak around $1400 before hitting a bad streak and going broke. Ah well.

It was actually kind of relaxing to practice his card playing skills this way, with nothing at risk. Dean made a note to see if he could try and get a real game together soon.

Rikku was hitting up the Pai-Gow Poker table. Because it had nifty dragons on it, and the game made no sense, and she kinda liked that sort of thing.

I am awesome at drinking games involving cards. Seriously. Asshole, Up and Down the River, Beat the Dealer, Suits...I'm just awesome.

Although I don't know if that's as much as my awesome playing skills or the fact that I have a stomach of steel.

Don't worry, you come up to WVU for a weekend during football season and you'll get so good at drinking you'll be able to chug paint thinner.

Oh my gosh, their little blurb on Caribbean Stud totally makes the game make no sense. They don't explain the bit where half the time, you're not betting because you think your hand can beat the dealer's, but because you're hoping the dealer's hand is too low to qualify, since he only actually plays with Ace-King High or better. And if you bet and he can't play, it doesn't matter what your hand was, you win your Ante bet and just get your Raise back.

........ um. I'm Relly, and I'm an enormous card geek. Sorry about that. o.o
