Basic Auto Mechanics, Session 3, Tuesday period 1

When the students entered they found the place set up as a rather large garage with a work area set up for each of them complete with equipment and car.

"Good morning," John greeted them. "Today we're going to cover one of the basics of car maintainance -- namely changing the oil. I'm going to walk you through the steps and then it'll be your turn to try." He demonstrated on the car that looked a lot like a certain 67 chevy impala.

"And that's how it's done," he said when he finished, wiping his hands off on a cloth. "Now it's your turn to try."

Romeo leaned back, watching this with some interest. He'd seen it done before, but doing it hemself would be new.

As Inara listened and observed, she became skeptical of ever being able to do this.

It felt odd to sit near to Inara in such a small class and never say anything to her, and she looked especially apprehensive this week.

Keeping his eyes on Mr. Winchester, Romeo leaned toward her and said under his breath, "Worry not -- it cannot be that hard."

Grateful for his support, Inara leaned over and whispered back, "I was trained to seduce and give comfort, not to rebuild and get dirty. I'm not sure I can do this."

"It's just draining the one thing, and pouring the other in," he whispered. "At least, I hope I can manage it." He'd feel a right idiot if he couldn't.

He raised an eyebrow at her. "Trained to seduce?"

"It's what Companions do," she said, still whispering. "It's not unlike this era's courtesan, I think. There are differences, but I believe many of them are cultural."

"That's what you're doing when you go home?" Romeo asked, somewhat surprised but keeping it in check; Inara certainly had the physical appearance for such work, if she so desired. "Being a courtesan?"

"Among other things," she nodded, not wanting to be overly open about the spying for the Independents. "I know it's not as accepted here, but it's a very respected profession where I'm from. In certain circles."

Romeo nodded carefully. "I wouldn't call it respected at home, but certainly accepted, at least if the woman works for a certain caliber of client." To him, a mistress was one thing, a streetwalker quite another.
