Childhood Games, Class #2, Thursday period 1

The class met out by the main campfire today, where Lily looked much happier being in the actual outdoors. "Hi, guys. You all came back!" she said, quickly doing a headcount to make sure that was true. "Today we're getting a little more active than last week and playing a game called Red Light, Green Light. Um, okay, in case you've never been in a car, you can only drive at streetlights when the light turns green, and you have to stop when it turns red. Same thing here, only minus the cars. That's another class.

"The first person will stand here," she said, standing next to the unlit campfire and turning her back, "so you can't see what everyone's doing. Everyone else stands where you guys are now, and when I say 'green light', you all run towards me. When I say 'red light' you all have to stop where you are or you're out and have to sit over there." She pointed to the spot she'd designated Time Out. Shush, old habits died hard. "The first person to reach the campfire wins, and you go on to the next round. Pretty easy, right? Any questions?

"Okay," she said, once any had been answered. "Who wants to go first?"

Lion-o got the concept that green means go. He hadn't yet figured out that it was a race, so he slowly made his way towards the campfire.

Turtle counted slowly until about...oh, five before declaring, "Red light!" and triumphantly turning around.

Lion-o froze in place, one foot lifted off the ground as he was stepping forward when he stopped.

Oooh! She'd caught someone mid-step! Turtle eyed Lion-o for a moment, trying not to smirk, waiting to see how his balance was before deciding when to go green again.

Lion-o balanced carefully on one foot, but he was able to remain still as he waited. That cat-like agility had to come in handy for something.

Turtle's nose wrinkled. Figured she'd forget about something like cat-like agility. She eyed Lion-o just a little bit more, trying to counteract his natural graces with a bit of intimidation before calling out "Red light!" and turning around again.

Now this was getting interesting. Lion-o smirked a little bit at the intimidation tactics, moving swiftly and quietly like any good cat as soon as the green light was called.

Turtle only counted to three in her head this time before whipping around with a fierce declaration of "Red light!"

Lion-o was oh-so-close to the campfire, but he wasn't there in time. At least he managed to stop with both feet on the ground this time.

...Man, he was quick. Okay, she'd have to do this really well. Turtle turned out, slowly dragging out her "Greeeeen light--"

And Lion-o made a mad dash for the campfire, hoping he'd make it there before the red light...

Almost as soon as she declared it, Turtle turned back around with a mush of a shout of, "REDLIGHT!"

Lion-o was going to fast to stop completely. He ended losing his balance and falling over with an "Ooph!"

Turtle threw her arms up in victory. "Yes! Lion-o! You're out!"

She paused, then blinked at him.

"You okay?"

"Yeah," said Lion-o, getting up and dusting himself off. "That was fun! I almost made it."

"You're pretty good at this, Lion-o; you got real close!"

"It was fun!" said Lion-o. "You're pretty good at this, too."
