Basic Auto Mechanics, session 2 (Tuesday period 1)

The Danger Shop was once again made up like a garage, except outside of it instead of the interior. John was standing by the probably by now familiar black chevy.

"Good morning," he said. He handed each student a handout. "That there is a good overview of what makes up a car engine and how it works. I thought, before we got into the fixing of same, we'd make sure you'd have some experience with how one works. So we're going to go for a drive." He grinned. "Virtually speaking.

"You'll both have a chance to take the wheel and go all out on the road." His grin turned wolfish. "Because in here you don't have to worry about crashing or being pulled over for speeding.

"So who wants to go first?"

Inara raised her hand. "How do you drive a car?"

"I'm sorry to be such a bother and slow you and Romeo down," she said sheepishly. "I didn't mean to."

Blushing more, she admitted, "I'd have to ask for pointers on that, too, unfortunately."

Maybe she could coax Gavin into showing her the simulator again.

"I think I may have to take your word for that," she laughed, "and I apologize in advance if I run your car into anything important."

Romeo grinned with glee as he took the wheel. He hadn't driven since his trip home, and that had all been on city roads.

He drove too fast -- close to 90 when the road was straight -- and took the curves too sharply, but didn't do anything that would have crashed the car.

Inara took a seat behind the wheel and stared blankly at both the instrument panel and the road ahead of her before turning to Professor Winchester with a pleading look for help.

"And the dials and gauges?" She asked, pointing to the dashboard and trying to memorize things as Professor Winchester said them. "Which ones do I need to prioritize on?"

Inara nodded. "Is there a recommended speed?"

"I suppose getting out and walking isn't an option?" She asked, not really expecting an answer. "How do I make the car take off?"

Inara put her foot on the brake, shifted (after a little struggle) to what she hoped was a forward gear, then stepped lightly on the gas pedal.

The car lurched forward a few feet before she took her foot off the gas and switched it to the brake and she frowned. "That didn't feel right."
