Living on Your Own, Friday, Period 1

The group met in a classroom equipped with cooking equipment, and the teacher was wearing an incongruous frilly pink apron that his face dared the class to say something about.

He was teaching home ec. May as well look the part.

After the students were assembled, Tyler began to talk.

"So this is Living on Your Own, or, as I seem to keep calling it when I'm trying to explain what it is, guerilla home ec. We'll talk about some kind of practical stuff -- finding a place, getting a job -- and also about stuff like cooking and enough housekeeping to keep your house from getting declared a fire hazard."

"My name is Tyler Durden. Call me Tyler, call me Mr. Durden, whatever works. As for how I am qualified to teach this, I've been basically on my own since I was 14 and I'm in one piece." He was ignoring the time he'd spent in state custody, yes. "If you need me outside class hours, my office hours are Mondays. Your TA is Meg Manning."

"This week, we're going to make soap. It's a little harder than most of what we'll do, but I figure you may as well dive right in. Plus I like making soap. Really it's a basic project -- rendered fat, lye, cold water and that's it. You can add scents or color if you want to. Supplies and directions are at the workstations. Lye's nothing to screw around with, so please, wear rubber gloves and work together if you don't know what you're doing."

"But before we start on the soap, I'd like to do that introductions thing. Name, age, experience living on your own, and" -- he smiled for the first time -- "who you would fight out of anyone, living or dead. Fictional figures included."

Michael was listening, though it wasn't anything that seemed to require intent attention.

A note was totally flicked over to Michael at some point.

Hi!

Hey, he sent back, with a slightly suspicious glance at her for the cheeriness.

Ino innocented right back at him. Cheery was totally good cover for any awkward, seriously.

Well, anyway, from her point of view.

I bet I know something you don't know. With a grin even.

Everybody knows stuff other people don't know. What is it?

Amber was listening and paying attention to Mr. Durden.

Gavin didn't mind the pink apron but, he hoped, whenever he had to do this stuff on his own, he could get it in blue.
intraspective: (joy!)

Ino? Was totally giggling about the apron.

Cal scratched his chin a little as he listened. Soap? They were making soap? First, he wondered, with a slight glance toward two certain blondes in the class (how could they not have been behind this?), if soap was going to follow him where ever he went now. And, second, he was thinking that if you had the resources to get all the crap to make soap, wouldn't it be easier and possibly cheaper to just buy it?

Of course, he had no idea what the running rates for lye was, so...

Anemone slouched down in her seat and scowled. Between this and her relationships class, someone was going to die. Probably messily.

Ino couldn't help but notice the scowl. Look on the bright-side, she wrote, making soap gives you the materials for explosions.

Anemone did grin briefly before bending over to write back. And I can bake really well...think I can make an exploding pie for extra credit?

Explosions were fun, and pie was fun, so therefore they ought to be combined. Clearly.

They should totally be combined, seriously.

With him? That might actually work. Ino grinned. He did teach Bomb class after all, so he’s got the right appreciation of it. ...even if he's got a few issues with his explosions actually, you know, killing people. Even fake people.

Not another one, she pouted, rolling her eyes. What is it with the adults here? What else are you supposed to use a bomb for? Seriously, you want large-scale death and destruction, you used a bomb or a giant space laser. It wasn't exactly rocket science.

Alice noticed the other girl -- the one with that large cuddly pet -- and how upset she seemed to be.

Frowning -- and hoping this was not to lead to rather severe consequences for disobedience -- Alice scribbled a short note, and placed it carefully on Anemone's desk.

Are you all right?

Kitten-girl! Anemone offered a quick wave before passing back the note. Just tempted to kill people annoyed. Next semester, I want to pick my own classes.

You didn't select yours? Did the school make an error? Perhaps if you tell them, they'll correct it for you.

Alice herself had classes on living on her own, strange animals, and choosing a weapon. She couldn't be more pleased, really.

Okay, so this class -- workshop, whatever -- could probably prove to be useful in future, certainly much more so at first glance than her other one; that was Katchoo's first impression. She allowed herself a brief smirk, hidden behind her hand, at Tyler's frilly apron; while it was far from the most outlandish thing she'd ever seen a man wear (just one of Darcy's parties took care of that really fast) it still amused her.

And then there was the soapmaking. That was a little bit of a surprise, although it did sound like an interesting project . . .

Amber glanced over at her. Great. She, Miss I'm too smart and accidentally snort cigarette smoke up my notstrils, was in her class too?

Great.

Man.

Just great.

Katchoo spared half a second to turn and give Amber a shark-toothed, evil smile that was gone as quickly as it crossed her face.

Amber blinked.

That was... well that was downright scary.

Girl must have some sort of personality disorder. It was called: Here, let me show you how evil and bitchy I can be without uttering a single word.

Amber bet she's won awards for it.

Oddly, she felt a little quilty for lying to her the other evening. "Hey," she whispered. "I quit smokin'." There. Assuage her guilt. Go her.

Ichigo may not have been listening too closely at the lecture. He blamed the apron. It was distracting and why would any guy show up wearing that in public.

Alice was taking notes. Somewhat fascinated by their teacher. He seemed ... darkly unusual. She knew the feeling.

Momoko tried to pay attention to the teacher, but she kept getting distracted by the apron. He'd look so much better in a blue one. Maybe one that said "kiss the cook"?
