Basic Cryptozoology - Wednesday - First Period - 7/9

Detective Crown Investigator Abigail Irene Garrett watched her students as they filtered into the room, her eyes keen and her expression thoughtful. Once they'd all sat down, she started to speak.

"Cryptozoology. Literally translated, it means the 'study of hidden animals', the study of and search for animals which fall outside of contemporary zoological catalogues. It consists of two primary fields of research: the search for living examples of animals taxonomically identified through fossil records, but which are believed to be extinct, and the search for creatures that fall outside of taxonomic records due to the necessary inclusion of magic in their creation or evolution. These are the types of things you'd find in myths, legends, or undocumented sightings.

"I realize that this subject might become quite varied depending on the world that each student comes from, but I have hopes that we can instead use the wide range of experience and experienced environments to benefit us all instead of to hold us in an unnecessary stranglehold based on a limited definition."

She took the opportunity to walk out from behind her desk to instead lean against it as she addressed the class.

"My name is Lady Abigail Irene Garrett. You may refer to me as Doctor Garrett, Professor, or DCI Garrett." She smiled at the class as if sharing a private joke. "To be honest, I'll probably respond most quickly to the last. In my own world, I work as a forensic sorceress for the British Crown, which more often than not leads me to handling such creatures as we'll be discussing in the coming weeks.

"Today, we won't really be covering all that much. I'd much rather learn a little about all of you, as well as a little about the places you're coming from and your own practical experience with our subject. So let's get some introductions accomplished while I hand out the syllabus and a small survey I'd like each of you to complete for the sake of everyone's comfort. I will also be waiting after class for anyone interesting in being my teaching assistant."

She smiled again.

"Mary, my maid, would no doubt appreciate it most heartily if someone was interested in the position."

[ocd coming up!][back a lil' bit later have some work to do]

Ella took a few notes, but mostly just listened. She was fascinated by Professor Garrett's job description, and wondered if Kyrria could use someone in that field.

"I'm Ella," Ella introduced herself. "I'm from Frell, which is a city in the country of Kyrria. We have some kinds of creatures that people here seem to think are mythical ... elves, ogres, goblins, a few fairies though they're very rare. I've met most of them and speak a little of each of their languages."

Ella was stuck for a moment, but finally filled in,

For reasons I would prefer to remain private, it would be in everyone's best interest that the subject of fairy gifts not be raised or taught in this class for the protection of myself or other persons on these grounds.

She probably didn't need the protection, but it would still be better for all if she was not put on the spot about the subject, as it would lead to a rather conspicuosly lost temper and a few too many questions.

"I'm Liz Sherman," Liz said, "I'm from Newark, New Jersey. My guardian's the head of the Bureua for Paranormal Research and Defense, which is secret government agency where I come from. His adopted son's a demon and I also know an Icthyo Sapien, which is a species similiar to a merman,"

Even though this was only the first day, Chad was thinking that some of this stuff sounded a bit complicated, so he tried to take some careful notes so that, in case anything was important later, he'd have the information.

"I'm Jo Harvelle," she said. "I'm from Nebraska, and I'm training to become a hunter. We make sure that the things that go bump in the night don't snack on people's livers or other body parts."

Hinata was taking careful notes and paying close attention. It sounded as if this was going to be a complicated class.

"I'm Mac. I come from Neptune, California," she said. "And... there was a sphinx outside the library when I was there the other week."

She decided it was easier to give the most recent example, than list out all the mythical things she'd come across living on this island for two and a half years.

"I a-am Hinata Hyuuga," she said. "And I'm f-from Konohagakure, i-in the Fire C-Country. My d-direct experience w-with this sort of t-thing is m-minimal, b-but my w-world does h-have d-demons and t-talking animals."

Of a sort. Summons were still animals after all.

Dōjima listened, fascinated. They had a Hunter teaching her class! She wasn't sure if she was absolutely in awe of this woman, or terrified.

Possibly both.
