The Right Tools, Tuesday Period 4

Kerrigan was wearing her long black coat heavy on her shoulders, leaving only minor humps at the back where wings brushed against the fabric. Again, she'd pulled the bony spines on her head back into a parody of a ponytail-- the only thing she couldn't hide was the fact that she was green.

For some reason, that made her head fill up with really irritating music. "Good afternoon, class," she said, looming quietly by the desk. "I'm Sarah Kerrigan. Some of you might've met me before, some of you might not've. This is your own chance to gawp if the idea crawls into your head somehow, so I suggest you use it and then shut it. I can read your minds, so don't bother hiding it, either." Well, most of their minds, anyway. You never knew what the school would throw at you in that department. "Yes," she added, "I know I don't look human. Let's get over it." Okay, she didn't know all of their positions on this, but it was better to get it out of the way.

"I used to be a special ops agent deployed on elite missions," she continued, "So I know what I'm talking about. Don't try questioning it. Over the next six weeks, I'm going to be giving you all an introductory tour of the stuff you might get thrown at you out there, and the weapons best suited to every scrap of it. There's not going to be an exam, so I'm just going to tell you all up front that 'Don't die' is, yes, the most basic rule of not getting your ass kicked, bit, or needled."

She shot Adama if he was there a Look, just to make sure. "River Tam will be your teaching assistant, so if you want any alternative perspectives, I suggest you go talk to her. That's the administrative stuff. Now we'll be moving on to the normal first-class introduction round. You know how it goes. You," she said, pointing a finger at the nearest student, "Name, age, favorite weapon to use. We'll see how that holds up by the end of this course. Mine's knives."

On some level, it was just good to be back.

[ wait for the ocd up! ]

Lee didn't gawp. Or take notes. He kind of doodled on his notebook instead. He wouldn't die. Pfft. He'd gotten this far already.

Gwen wasn't so much gawking as wondering how long it would take Jack to hit on Kerrigan. She didn't think it'd be that long.

Liir didn't exactly gawp but he did get a wry sort of curl to the end of his lips.

Green. Ha. Well, it's familiar at least. And judging by the tone, they'd probably get along.

He took notes dutifully, something in him oddly settled by the green alien-looking woman.

Helen stared briefly from behind her hair, then settled in to memorizing whatever this Sarah Kerrigan had to say.

Jen had largely given up on trying to get actual facts out of the radio broadcasts, so seeing Kerrigan was a surprise that she tried her best to hide, though probably not with a whole lot of success.

Great. One class on relationships... one class where the teacher and her really totally didn't get along.

Ino tugged at her hair and wondered why the paperwork gods hated her so much this term.

Hoshi concentrated on taking notes so she wouldn't be tempted to stare.

Jack stared. Like a staring thing. Suddenly, there was a swelling of music as Jack's hair found a kindred spirit She was green. Wait. Crap. She could read minds so she'd know that Jack was thinking about how she was green and could read minds about how Jack was thinking she was green. And could read minds.

There was some note taking as well.

Sam sort of stared. Like he was trying not to stare. She was another alien, right? Like Bee, only not a robot. Okay, he could handle this. Really.

Head tilted as she listened and jotted down a few notes, Turtle couldn't help thinking that she thought green was a rather nice color for Miss Lieutenant Kerrigan, but, then again, she was a little partial to the color as a whole, and hers in particular had that sort of faded olivey tint of money, so it went without saying.

Also, she thought Sarah was a very nice name, and was still kind of shocked that Miss Lieutenant Kerrigan had a first name, but it did answer her constantly nagging ponderance of whether or not Lieutenant was her actual first name.

Thankfully, Miss Lieutenant Sarah Kerrigan was too long, even for Turtle.

Alice was taking notes, giving the teacher the occasional curious glance.

Not staring, precisely. More intrigued. She'd never quite met a creature of this variety before. The professor was a rather interesting shade of green.

"I'm Lee Adama," he said, having almost gone with a fake name just to tease but deciding against it, "I'm eighteen and my favorite weapon is Colonial Fleet standard issue pistol."

"Gwen Cooper, tw- fifteen, and I guess my favourite weapon would be a gun, you know, nice compact thing."

I'm Lois Lane, I've seventeen and my favorite weapon is a gun," she said. "I don't have a specific favorite."

"Liir Thropp," he started, lifting his chin a little as he said it. "And I don't know my age. Probably fifteen, perhaps sixteen; I couldn't say.

"And as I only have one, well, 'weapon', I'd have to choose my broom."

Other than some brief sword drills and musket training that was ages old (but still there, he often let himself forget), his training had all been hand to hand.

"I'm Helen Haras-Uquara," Helen said firmly. "I'm 16 and this is my favorite weapon at the moment." She turned her arm into a shimmering blade of light, inside which one could see, if they looked very carefully, a faint outline of a tiny withered arm.

"Yamanaka Ino, fifteen," if she counted the seven months in Paris, shush, "and, well, kunai."

Or something. She didn't really have a favourite.

"Jen Scotts," she said briefly, "and I'm eighteen. Sort of," she added under her breath.

"I'm pretty good with a blaster and my Chronosabers, but I actually find hand-to-hand more satisfying."

River was here, leaning casually against a wall. She paid attention while Kerrigan spoke, then watched the class in silence. She was here if anyone wanted to talk to her. She didn't glare at Lee.
