Karaoke For Fun And Profit #1 [Monday, Period 4, 7/7]

A little bit of ice -- okay, maybe a lot of ice -- couldn't ruin Mike's good mood. It helped that today's Danger Shop simulation was in his second favorite Las Vegas nightclub.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Karaoke For Fun And Profit. And welcome to PURE!" said Mike. "My friend Delinda used to run this place for while, back when I was on tour. And like my singing gig, her tenure at PURE did not last long. She was bit more successful than I was, though, and got a better offer at Club Mystique. For those of you who are new to the workshop, my name is Mike Cannon, my aunt is Gladys Knight of Gladys Knight and the Pips, and I had the opportunity a few years back to go on tour with the Pips. It can be pretty tough breaking into the music business, though, especially when one of your fellow back-up singers tries to break your nose."

Mike decided that he'd said enough on that matter. "Why don't we move onto introductions? Tell us a little bit about yourself, and then, if you're feeling brave enough, go ahead and get on stage." He already had his own song picked out to start things off.

Because of course no one's talking amongst themselves while Mike is talking, right?

Actually, Amber was bent over a small notepad, jotting down notes. Of what? She only knew.

Not that Turtle would ever talk in class (really!), but she was taking a moment or two to sort of scope out who was in this class with her.

Who are you and why are you here?

"I'm Savannah Levine. I'm here because I enjoy singing and I enjoyed your class a lot last time."

"I'm glad to see that you're back, Savannah," said Mike, grinning.

"I'm glad I was able to sign up again."

"My name," Turtle gave the class a winning smile, "is Turtle Wexler, and I'm the co-owner of Turtle & Canary here in town. I'm going to be a junior in the fall, I'm active in student council and radio, and my favorite color is green. I'm taking this class because there's the word profit in the title, and I think profit is very important. I would have taken it last semester, but I already had too many classes."

She gave a small pouty face at that, but it went back up quickly. "So yay! Hi!"

Yeah, she had the introduction thing down pat.

Mike chuckled. "Luckily I had more stuff to cover than I could do in just seven weeks. We'll cover karaoke competitions for cash prizes in this workshop. You should enjoy that, Turtle."

Turtle tilted her head as she considered this. "Will we be actually competing for any cash prizes in this class, Mister Cannon, sir, or just talking about them?"

It was a very important distinction. One that could very well determine her schedule for the next few weeks, because if they were actually competing she'd have to start practicing yesterday.

"I'd definitely like to put together some sort of competition," said Mike. "I'm not sure if the school will let me offer a cash prize for a competition that's part of a class, but I can show you how to find them on the mainland."

Aww, but it wasn't as much fun if it wasn't for cash. Turtle frowned a little, but a certain gear started turning in her head.

"What if a local business were to donate a cash prize, and then what? Do you think the school would allow it if they weren't the ones having to put in the money?"

"I'm sure if some local businesses could sponsor a competition, then that shouldn't be a problem," said Mike.

"Well, then," Turtle said with a grin, "I'll just have to look into that."

She even had a local business in mind, wouldn't you know it.

"Hi, I'm Amber Atkins, an upcomin' senior, and I'm takin' this class 'cause the last one was so much fun. I actually love to sing and doin' it like this, in a class settin' is very encouragin'."

"I'm glad to see that you're back, Amber," said Mike.

Amber grinned wide. "I wouldn't miss it! How do you feel to be teachin' the class again? And is there going to be anythin' done differently this time?"

"I'm kind of excited to be doing this class again. I had so many ideas that I couldn't work into the first term," said Mike. "There's going to be some new topics, and we might just have a karaoke competition to finish off the term."

"A competition? Oh wow, that'd be fun, Mr. Cannon!"

"I'm Naomi Wildman," Naomi said, "I'll be a junior in the fall and I'm taking this class because I enjoy music and singing and I thought that this class would be fun,"

"It should definitely be a lot of fun, Naomi," said Mike. "We'll probably cover a little bit with different styles of music."

"I'm Toby. I'm here because I listen to music," he said, adjusting his black button-down shirt. It was new.

"How do you feel about singing, Toby?" asked Mike.

"Good," Toby said. "I sing along when I listen sometimes."

"Ah, my name is Kevin. I've thought about headlining in a rock band. I sang lead in my second grade play, Chicken Little Gets it Right." He thought for a moment, and decided he didn't have anything else to add.

"I don't think you'll have a problem with this workshop, Kevin," said Mike. "Actually, we were going to cover rock music last term, but I didn't get around to it. I'll definitely make sure we get to it this time around."

Get up and sing!

Taking a moment to prepare herself, Amber stood behind the mic and smiled out over the audience. She actually chose a song that had really affected her at one time but now was just fun to sing. It brought back memories, good and bad; she was just focusing on the good.

Turtle gave Amber a nice big round of applause when she finished, because that was really good! Plus, she totally had to give props and support to her employee and everything.

Amber laughed and waved at Turtle. It really was fun singing for a crowd.

Savannah was in a really good and silly mood. That would be way she was singing this song (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI). It was amazing she didn't collapse into giggles at the end of it, really.

He's hanging out after class if anyone needs to see him.

At one point during the class, Troy snuck in, and watched for a little bit before approaching Mike. "Hi," he said. "I... heard there was a karaoke class? I was wondering if I could sit in for a bit. I miss my vocal class from New York already."

"That's no problem," said Mike. "Vocal classes in New York? I'm a little surprised you didn't sign up for this class."

"I would have," Troy said, "but I already graduated. I can't take workshops anymore."

He looked up at the stage. "And yeah, a friend got me into the NYU summer theatre program. That's where I was for the first term. I'll be heading back there in the fall, too."

Mike looked thoughtful. "You know, I could use a TA, and you already have singing experience that could be very helpful. How would you like the job?"

"Really?" Troy's grin fair split his face in two. "That would be fantastic! What would I have to do?"

"All you'd have to do is join us in class every week, cheer on the students, be available to answer questions, and if I can't make it to class, I'll need you to take over for me for that day," explained Mike.

Hmph. I let Mike's paid time expire and lost all the fun icons.

Anyway, Mondays happen to be my day off so I'm around all day! Occasional SP as I'm supposed to be cleaning out my father's basement today.
