All of the students who'd earned or been given detention had been told to meet Fraser outside of the Danger Shop. And that's precisely where he was.

"Good morning," he said pleasantly. "I trust you all slept well and I thank you for being on time. Please enter the Danger Shop."

It is now seven-oh-six. You have exactly ~~eight hours and fifty-four minutes~~ four hours and fifty four minutes to think about why you're here. To ponder the error of your ways and you may not talk. You will not move from these seats and you will not sleep.

"Before you begin your detention," Fraser said, looking down at them, "I would like to hope that we never meet again in this circumstance. I once met an Inuit elder who said that, those who get into trouble once learn from their mistakes. Those who get into trouble twice obviously have hard heads and deserve whatever trouble comes at them next."

He smiled and then gathered up each person's snacks before shooing them into the Danger Shop library.

"But why me?" Cal asked, with a pout sent Jaina's way. "Why not Lois? She's already got a broken limb, we can just keep kicking her while she's down."

She tried not to laugh. "I think that might break the badass code, though," she said. "She's part of the club now, see." She might still do it anyway.

"...Do you have to break something to be in the badass club?" Cal asked, wondering not because he ever expected to be badass enough to be in it, not by a long shot, but just out of curiosity.

He did survive being hit by a tractor, after all. That was...kind of badass.

"No, but she tried to take on a god, I think that earns her an induction," she said. "I allowed it." Because she made the rules, of course.

Clearly. Who else, after all?

"I think that's acceptable," Cal agreed with a nod because, apparently, his thoughts on the matter counter. "Hell of a lot more than what I did, anyway, but maybe next time."

Probably not.

"How'd you do with everything?" she asked, wondering how she hadn't checked up sooner.

"I didn't," Cal admitted with a shrug, trying to seem casual about the whole thing although his eyes shifted with embarrassment. "But I think Ino put it well when she told me that sometimes, you have to pick your battles and this one was just a bit beyond me."

So there was no shame in his cowardice, in his ineffectual inability to do anything but sit and wait. If he thought it enough, he might start thinking it was true.

"It's true," she said. "It wasn't exactly the most fun, and even just some of the things on the streets I didn't even want to deal with." The ghost thing had creeped her out, yes.

"And I am still new to all of this," Cal pointed out, "no matter how hard I try to be okay with it. Still, it sucks, because I feel I let some of my friend down, but it's not like I would have been able to have done much anyway. I'm sure you kicked plenty of ass, but I'm not quite to that point yet."

Or probably ever.

"Don't feel like you let anyone down," Jaina told him. "It worked out in the end, and the fact is, every time something like this happens I'm sure there are people who wound up needing help themselves because they weren't ready to throw themselves into it. If you're aware you're not at that point, that's not a bad thing at all."

Since there wasn't anything he could have really done about it either way, Cal just shrugged again.

"So, you in here for a reason, or randomly struck by the blow of Fate like myself?"

Ah, Topic Changes, every his saving grace.

"I refused to crash a simulated ship in Flight Class," Jaina said. "So shoot me, I train to not die."

"What are you, crazy?" Cal asked after a moment of piecing that out. "Survival? Who wants that?"

"Me and John, at least," she shrugged. "Taking a detention was easier than pleading trauma and hey, I had a really good run in that simulator before landing in one piece, so I'm happy with it."

There was another pause to go over everything again. "So, I am getting this right that the object of the assignment was to crash, right?"

"Yes. Supposedly we were supposed to learn how to crash right, or something. Nevermind there never is a right way," she said. "And with what I fly you don't crash as much as you do blow up."

"...I'd probably be the one blowing up," Cal admitted. "I've barely even ever driven a car."

But he did know how one of those worked now.

"It's amazingly not hard to do. I've managed it," Jaina said, and paused. "The blowing up, not the car. Though I have done that, too."

"Oh, I'm not saying it's hard," Cal said, grinning slightly. "That's why I'm pretty sure I'll have no problem with it, either."

"You should go through a simulation," Jaina suggested. "Count how long you last, just for fun."

"Oh, that'll be interesting. That could entertain us for a whole...five seconds."
