Detention [Saturday]

All of the students who'd earned or been given detention had been told to meet Fraser outside of the Danger Shop. And that's precisely where he was.

"Good morning," he said pleasantly. "I trust you all slept well and I thank you for being on time. Please enter the Danger Shop."

It is now seven-oh-six. You have exactly ~~eight hours and fifty-four minutes~~ four hours and fifty four minutes to think about why you're here. To ponder the error of your ways and you may not talk. You will not move from these seats and you will not sleep.

"Before you begin your detention," Fraser said, looking down at them, "I would like to hope that we never meet again in this circumstance. I once met an Inuit elder who said that, those who get into trouble once learn from their mistakes. Those who get into trouble twice obviously have hard heads and deserve whatever trouble comes at them next."

He smiled and then gathered up each person's snacks before shooing them into the Danger Shop library.

Friday sat back his chair, pencil untouched on the desk right on top of the paper that was also untouched. He looked barely awake and not entirely sure what he was doing here or why he wasn't in bed.

Once he was fairly certain that Constable Fraser was gone and not listening in, he gave up on silence. "Does anyone else here think that the detention lottery is stupid?"

"Completely," John said. "It's like they're punishing us for crimes we've yet to commit." Granted, he'd committed today's crime, but he'd been in detention at least a few other times via lottery.

"In that case, I'll take it as a credit from the school for when I decide to do something really stupid or really cool."

"Such a beautiful sentiment. Done anything stupid or cool in the past?" John asked, wondering if there was possible prank assistance here.

"Not since I got here," Friday admitted. "I'm a bit out of practice, actually. You here from the lottery or something stupid or cool?"

"I would say cool if we're using cool as smart," John told him. "Teacher might disagree there just a little."

"They usually do or detention wouldn't exist. Actually, no, even with that I don't understand why detention exists. They waste our time, but it doesn't really stop anyone from doing what they want to do."

"It's definitely stupid," Lois agreed. "It's screwed me over twice already. I'm just going to have to start earning my detentions. It'll be more fun."

Friday grinned. "Like I said to him," he nodded at John, "I'm taking this one as a freebie for when I do do something wrong. I think we could come up with something fitting."

"We definitely have to. I mean, this is ridiculous. At least my last detention was fun with the whole obstacle course thing," she said. "This one kind of blows."

"We'll have to make our own fun." As soon as he said it, he was aware of the fact that he sounded like a complete dork. Friday took a moment to regroup and try not to sound like a dork the next time he opened his mouth. "John had some ideas."

"Let's hope these ideas of his are better than the drunken barbershop one he had earlier this week," Lois said. She had been a little shocked earlier to see that John's hair had grown back so quickly. Clearly his hair was magic.

"Drunken..." he trailed off. "I don't know whether I want to know or if it's something best left alone. Do you have any ideas on how not to die of boredom?"

"Is that that it is?" Cal muttered with a slight sneer, and rubbed his tired, still half-asleep face. "Ugh. I knew I didn't actually do anything..."

"Me neither. I could have slept in today. A perfectly good Saturday morning lost to," he tried not to look at the pencil and paper, "essays."

Cal could be...working out. Or sleeping in. He might have been okay with option as well, and he shook his head. Not to mention the fact that he already did weeks of the 'who you are' bullcrap for Dr. Luce. And, apparently, got it wrong.

"Waste of time, and paper..."

Friday decided that then was the perfect time to scrunch his paper up into a wad and toss it at Cal's head.

Cal, not quite expecting that, had a wad of paper bouncing off his head. "Hey, now," he said, holding up the most understated finger of warning ever, "kid-I-hardly-know, we've got a long morning ahead of us. Do you really want to start that?"

Not that Cal would really ever do anything about it; he was much too lazy for a paper war, and if Friday kept throwing them, most likely, Cal would just keep getting hit by them and that'd be the extent of it.

"Normally," Ino said, "detention's a lot more fun, so no. I don't think it's stupid."

...Ino liked detention, okay? Just not essays, ugh.

"Detention...fun," Friday tried to wrap his head around it. "Nope, sorry, not seeing it. But come on, it's stupid because I didn't even do anything." He jerked his head towards Lois and Cal. "Neither did they. Then suddenly we have to be here on a Saturday morning. I could be watching cartoons." For some reason, he felt that this was something worth his time.

She snickered. "They're normally more... uh, dangerous than this? This is actually the first detention here that I've earned. And the last two were definitely fun, seriously. Got to flee from alien hordes in one, and the other was a rope course over chocolate pudding."

"Chocolate pudding is definitely dangerous." He was actually being serious. Pudding had almost caused the end of the world where he was from. Well, nanobots who replicated pudding (dream topping really), but pudding? Definitely dangerous. "Both of those sound a lot like work to me. Why can't there be detention involving sleep? Or something fun, like being in a rock band or throwing mangos at something." He had an odd idea of what was fun.

"I could do the mango one," she had to grin at that, "but, seriously, sure they were work, but they were a lot of fun."

"Just be glad no one's turned you into anything yet," said Jaina. Not that she was bitter about detention there.

"No way am I getting turned into anything," Friday insisted, a little alarmed at the thought. "I heard all the stories about that happening and I'm determined that I'm going to stay 100% myself."
